On the styling front, we consider the Seltos a rare miss for Kia these days — that front fascia is just too busy, and too different from other Kia products. But if you're less bothered than we are, this subcompact SUV merits serious consideration. It doesn't even feel small on the inside, so you won't feel like you're giving up much versatility versus larger, pricier SUVs. Just keep in mind that the turbo engine, which transforms the Seltos' driving character with its quick acceleration and eight-speed automatic transmission, comes at a considerable price premium over the insipid base engine, which comes with a less-than-gratifying CVT. The tech is super-impressive either way — even the base Kona comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen that gives the cabin an upscale feel. The Taos stands out in this segment for its energetic acceleration, sprinting to 60 mph in about 7.5 seconds with either front- or all-wheel drive. Multiple rivals can't even break the 9-second barrier, so that's serious speed for a subcompact SUV — and although some of the models here offer optional engine upgrades, the Taos comes standard with swiftness. VW's smallest SUV doesn't skimp on fuel economy, either, so you get to have it both ways. Additional strengths include generous cargo space and surprisingly decent rear legroom, but the mandatory 8-inch touchscreen is underwhelming. The Trax is a compelling subcompact SUV in its own right, but we should also note that it's the better of Chevy's two entrants in this segment, edging out the more expensive Trailblazer for everyone who doesn't need AWD. The Trax comes only with front-wheel drive, but it utilizes a conventional six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the front-drive Trailblazer is stuck with a CVT. There's a ton of value in this package, from the head-turning style and spacious interior to the decidedly contemporary touchscreen tech. Moreover, the Crosstrek's legit off-road chops mean it's ready to hit some light-duty trails right out of the showroom. If you're good with all that and just want Toyota's peerless resale value in a subcompact SUV package, we totally understand the appeal. The Trailblazer shares most of its Trax platform-mate's strengths, but unless you absolutely need all-wheel drive, the Trax is the more appealing pick. The Trailblazer's interior doesn't have any notable advantages — if anything, the newer Trax feels more contemporary inside — and we prefer the Trax's exterior styling, too, not to mention its considerably lower starting price. Another strike against the Trailblazer is that the base 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine is saddled with a CVT, whereas the same engine in the Trax (the only one offered) is paired with a more gratifying six-speed automatic. You can get a nine-speed automatic in the Trailblazer if you spring for AWD, which comes bundled with that transmission as well as a more powerful 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine, but now you're about $5k higher than the Trax to start, and the Trailblazer AWD's 200-plus-pound weight gain mostly neutralizes the extra horses. We're not really sure why Chevy went to the trouble of creating both of these models; it'd be a lot simpler if the more likable Trax could just have an AWD option. See Full Details >

Buick Envista

This is a tricky category sometimes, and the Envista lays that bare. It’s the same length as its much more expensive Envision stablemate, which we classify as a compact SUV. What gives? In this case, price takes precedence — the Envista happens to compete on price with SUVs that are generally a bit shorter. Also, since the Envista's fastback rear roofline cuts into cargo space, it has less room back there than most of its subcompact rivals, let alone the compact crew. However you want to classify it, the Envista offers exceptional style and strong feature content for this price point, but its front-drive-only powertrain and ponderous acceleration join its humble cargo capacity as limiting factors. But compared to its competitors more broadly, the Encore GX struggles to make a case for itself due to its relatively high price, lackluster acceleration and unimpressive fuel economy. The Rogue’s styling sets the tone, for sure, as you'll be hard-pressed to find a more handsome SUV in this segment (maybe the CX-50?). Similarly, Nissan has managed to make the interior look and feel nice without charging an arm and a leg, although the touchscreen's looking dated these days. The turbocharged three-cylinder engine has less spunk than you'd think given its healthy power and torque numbers — you'll get to 60 mph in about 8 seconds — but the fuel economy is great. It's hard to find true flaws in the Rogue's formula; the main issue is that Nissan hasn’t invested in keeping it fully up to date. The Bronco boasts a more tech-forward interior than the older Wrangler, but its trump card is the optional 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 engine, which sets it apart from the Jeep's so-so turbo four and rudimentary non-turbo V6. You can get that EcoBoost V6 with either two or four doors, and although it starts at about $50k for 2025, that kind of makes sense if you think of it as the Bronco equivalent of the Mustang GT. The base four-cylinder is a strong performer in its own right, but 300 horsepower is less impressive when it comes with a buzzy econo-car soundtrack. Step up to the beefy 330-hp V6 and you've got yourself the finest compact off-road SUV in the land for roughly the average cost of a new vehicle today. Do note, however, that if you want that V6 in a two-door Bronco, your only option for 2025 is the $75k-plus Stroppe Edition, a very cool Baja-inspired variant with fancy Fox shocks that unfortunately costs 50 percent more than the base four-door 2025 Bronco V6. Always a force to be reckoned with among factory off-roaders, the Wrangler remains competitive in most respects, including value, as it gives you plenty of options in the $30s while the Bronco is a $40k+ truck. But the Ford ekes out a victory here thanks to superior cabin technology and available turbocharged V6 power. For ranking purposes, we're leaving aside the boss of them all, the delightfully demented Wrangler Rubicon 392 with its 6.4-liter Hemi V8, because it's a six-figure machine that's hardly ever seen in the wild. If there were a mainstream Wrangler with a more appealing engine — the new Hurricane turbocharged inline-6 would do nicely — then the finishing order here could easily change. We do give the Wrangler extra credit for the 4xe plug-in hybrid model, which zips to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and offers 22 miles of electric range. At the same time, it shares its platform and powertrain with the far cheaper Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, so you'd do well to check that model out, too, if you're seriously considering the UX. By the way, if you're wondering why the cargo capacity is so low, that's the space behind the rear seats, and it's the only figure that Lexus publishes. The UX can haul considerably more than that with the rear seatbacks folded, but we can't quantify it.
