Is the 2025 Honda HR‑V a Good SUV?
"The HR-V is an eminently sensible little SUV if you're judging by passenger space, cargo space or resale value — and those aren't small considerations. But the sole powertrain, a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a CVT, is better at making noise than forward progress, and it's actually less fuel-efficient than the turbo powertrain in the larger CR-V. We're not blown away by the two available touchscreens' graphics or functionality, either. The HR-V is a safe play, but in terms of the product itself, it's a long way from the top."—Ranked #11 out of 18 Subcompact SUVs
Which 2025 Honda HR‑V Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2025 Honda HR‑V that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.
1. 2025 Honda HR‑V 2.0 (Front-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $25,400
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 158
- Torque: 138 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,159 lbs
- Length: 179.8 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
Despite being 300 pounds lighter and significantly smaller than the base CR-V 1.5T, the HR-V trails its big brother in fuel economy by 2 mpg. The CR-V accelerates much more quickly, too, and it can tow 1,500 pounds versus zero, officially, for the HR-V. All told, the HR-V's performance makes the CR-V look like a steal for $5k more to start.
2. 2025 Honda HR‑V 2.0 (All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $26,900
- MPG Combined: 27
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 158
- Torque: 138 lb-ft
- 0-60: 9.4 sec
- Weight: 3,276 lbs
- Length: 179.8 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
Adding all-wheel drive only costs $1,500, but it also adds more than a hundred pounds at the scales. Keep in mind that the HR-V borrows its 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from the entry-level Civic, yet the HR-V AWD weighs 400 pounds more. That's asking a lot of an engine that's far from frisky even in the lightweight Civic.
