The Santa Fe stretches the definition of "compact," but it's definitely smaller than midsize 3-row stalwarts like its Palisade stablemate. Notably, the Santa Fe comes standard with the desirable turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, whereas the related Kia Sorento starts with a weaker non-turbo four-cylinder and costs more than the Hyundai if you want the turbo. Kia's got so many SUVs that it's hard to categorize all of them, and the Sorento might be the hardest of all. Dimensionally, it's right in between the compact and midsize segments, but since it comes standard with a third row that's decidedly compact (don't put adults back there if they're your friends), this segment is where it belongs. We suspect the Sorento will be a just-right size for many families, as it avoids the bulk of the midsize Telluride while providing the handy-if-you-need it functionality of that modest third row. The regular Highlander proved to be too cramped in the third row and cargo area for today's shoppers, but the Grand Highlander corrects those flaws and then some. It looks great, first of all — a rare thing in this segment — with muscular angles and contours that give the runway-ready Telluride a run for its money. Its interior oozes contemporary sophistication, highlighted by a 12.3-inch touchscreen that's standard on every model. Want a hybrid? There are two versions to choose from, one that essentially borrows the Camry's hybrid powertrain to maximize fuel economy (figure mid-30s combined), the other prioritizing performance (but also driving up the price) with 362 turbocharged horsepower. There's not much daylight between the two models. In our experience, the Telluride has a slightly sportier demeanor on the road, while the Palisade feels a bit bigger (it's not) and softer. The CX-90 is one of those vehicles that sound great in theory, especially if you like to drive. How could Mazda go wrong with turbocharged inline-6 power — just like a BMW! — and upscale furnishings in a family-friendly three-row package? That inline-6 has delivered slower acceleration times than its specs would predict, however, and it doesn't exactly sound like a BMW six, either. We could do without the awkward bulge at the rear of the roofline, too, and we'd note that the bulge doesn't stop the third row from being snug. But enough of our kvetching. The CX-90 does enjoy Mazda's typical edge in driving dynamics, and in case you're less than thrilled by that inline-6, there's also a plug-in-hybrid CX-90 that gives you 26 miles of electric range and gets to 60 mph a few tenths sooner than the regular model. The Highlander suffers from the existence of its newer, more spacious and just generally superior sibling, the Grand Highlander. But now that it's here, the regular Highlander's purpose is hard to make out. It costs about the same as the Grand, its interior is relatively dated, and it's not really better at anything. Not that this isn't a handsome rig — we like its chiseled good looks — but cabin tech is changing rapidly these days, and the way the Pathfinder's central touchscreen sprouts tablet-like from the dash is a signifier of its age. The Telluride, for example, now features the sort of single-frame widescreen module that's becoming the industry norm. The current Durango has been with us for what feels like forever, but it still drives and rides nicely, and there's adult-friendly room here in all three rows. Plus, if you want a rear-wheel-drive platform, the Durango remains one of your only options in this segment, and unlike the rear-drive Explorer, the Durango delivers truck-like towing capacity. You're also looking at the only mainstream three-row midsize SUV that offers V8 power — the Durango R/T is a hilariously fun family hauler if you're into that sort of thing, while the insane Durango SRT Hellcat effectively doubles the R/T V8's output (and price). The Grand Highlander Hybrid starts about $5k higher than the regular Grand Highlander, but you get a 50-percent improvement on the fuel economy front, which we'd say is a pretty fair deal. The thing to know about the standard Grand Highlander Hybrid is that it uses largely the same powertrain as the Camry sedan, which is a roundabout way of saying it's not fast — not remotely. It gives up 1,500 pounds of towing capacity to the regular model, too, checking in at 3,500 pounds versus 5,000. Stepping up to the "Hybrid Max" turbo hybrid powertrain fixes both of these problems, restoring the 5,000-pound towing limit and getting you to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds if you stand on it, but the price shoots up into the mid-$50s. There are hardly any compact EVs with three seating rows, and while the EQB's third row is predictably cramped, it could be a panacea for parents who don't want to buy a behemoth in order to have a couple of extra seats for small children. Provided you'll be doing most of your driving around town and can charge up easily at home, a three-row EQB could actually be a nice lifestyle solution. These upscale family haulers pair minivan-like passenger capacity with all the trappings that luxury SUV shoppers expect. But if you're looking for minivan-like comfort, too, you might be in the wrong place. Many of the SUVs here have small third rows, whereas non-luxury midsize three-row SUVs tend to offer more practical seating. You'll find some exceptions, though, and if you only need that third row occasionally, or only for little ones, any of these haulers will get the job done with refinement and features to spare.

We'll lead with the bad news: the TX's base turbocharged four-cylinder engine won't knock your socks off. We're talking zero to 60 mph in 8 seconds here — that's slower than most non-luxury three-row haulers. You can opt for luxury-grade swiftness by stretching for the TX 500h hybrid or the TX 550+ plug-in hybrid, but now you're up in the $70-80k range. Another oddity is that the TX only offers seven-passenger seating in non-hybrid TX 350 trim, so if you upgrade to a hybrid for more power and efficiency, you're stuck with six-passenger seating. Nonetheless, the TX carries over most of the excellence from its Toyota Grand Highlander platform-mate, including copious cargo space and adult-friendly seating in all three rows.
