Ford Maverick

Offering either a zesty turbo four-cylinder engine or a frugal hybrid powertrain, the Maverick has turned out to be a right-sized truck with broad appeal. Significant updates for 2025 further sweeten the deal, including fresh styling for the front fascia, available AWD for the hybrid variant and a 13.2-inch touchscreen inside. The turbocharged Maverick is a heck of a deal for just over $27k to start, as it gets you to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and still delivers 25 mpg combined with standard AWD (the front-drive version has been discontinued). Hyundai Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz has cool styling, a high-tech interior that's easily the classier of the two options here, and an available turbo engine that delivers quick acceleration. We also like its relatively adult-friendly backseat. All good stuff. Our main gripe is that the turbo starts at $40k, whereas the rival Maverick turbo can be had for well less than $30k. If Hyundai offered that zestier engine at a more accessible price point, the Santa Cruz could conceivably dethrone the Maverick. But every Colorado now comes standard with the 310-horsepower version of the 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine (there's no more "Max" distinction for that version), so you get the best Chevy has to offer no matter which model you choose. Ford Ranger

Offering an agreeable balance of ride and handling, the Ranger also delights the right foot with its optional turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, which is easily the most capable power plant in this class. Its towing and payload ratings likewise come up aces. Ford checked all the boxes this time, although we don't think the Ranger is particularly attractive aside from the burly Raptor off-roader. Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is unlikely to lose its sales crown anytime soon, but the gap has closed lately despite the midsize Toyota's recent redesign. On the plus side, there's seemingly a Tacoma for every imaginable truck shopper — you can choose from hybrid or conventional powertrains, Access Cab or double cab, short bed or long bed, and a dizzying array of trim levels. By the numbers, though, the Tacoma falls short of the class leaders in towing capacity, and its acceleration is midpack at best, even with the complex hybrid system, which adds too much weight for its extra output to move the needle. The fuel economy isn't great, either, despite the downsizing from V6 to turbocharged four-cylinder power. We love that you can still get a manual transmission, and we dig the styling, too. Although the 2025 Ford F-150 carries over essentially unchanged, last year's model received significant updates, including some addition by subtraction with the discontinuation of the base non-turbo V6 engine. That means every F-150 now comes standard with an excellent power plant, as even the entry-level 2.7-liter turbo V6 delivers powerful and refined performance. Throw in advanced yet user-friendly cabin technology, an alluring hybrid variant and plenty of no-nonsense truck toughness, and it's easy to see why the F-150 keeps right on winning. Amid the hullabaloo about the new Hurricane turbo inline-6 replacing the Hemi V8, it's worth noting that the Hurricane's max towing and payload capacities remain broadly competitive with those of the Chevy Silverado 1500 with the 5.3-liter V8. It's only at the top of the chain — the max towing figure for the entire lineup — that the newly V8-deprived Ram falls down. Anyway, this is still the luxury SUV of pickup trucks, thanks to its coil-spring suspension and quiet cabin. Step up to the Tundra Hybrid and you'll get even more power, plus the best combined fuel economy in the lineup. Compared to the competition, the Tundra falls short of top honors for towing and payload capacities, but it's close enough that many truck shoppers will give it a pass. Think of the Titan XD as a regular Titan Crew Cab with the long bed and you won't be far off. You can only get the regular Titan Crew Cab with the short bed, so the XD — which comes only with the crew cab/long bed combination — at least has a unique body style to offer. Ultimately, although the government classifies the Titan XD as a heavy-duty truck (which is why it doesn't have EPA fuel economy ratings), it's really a 'tweener that's larger than the regular trucks but lacks the massive capabilities of the big boys. It's early yet, but we must say that there are some pretty cool machines here already — unless, you know, you need to do long-distance towing or other tasks where conventional trucks still reign supreme.

You'll want the bigger battery, then, which also happens to unlock the maximum output of 1,000 horsepower, a nice round number. Zero to 60 mph takes 3.3 seconds in that configuration.
