Is the 2025 Toyota Tundra a Good Truck?
"The Tundra delivers strong acceleration thanks to standard turbocharged V6 power, though its two available states of tune can be a bit confusing (the base version in the SR trim makes 348 horsepower, while the higher trims boast 389 hp). Step up to the Tundra Hybrid and you'll get even more power, plus the best combined fuel economy in the lineup. Compared to the competition, the Tundra falls short of top honors for towing and payload capacities, but it's close enough that many truck shoppers will give it a pass. Overall, this Toyota doesn't raise the bar in any particular way, but it's a solid competitor that merits consideration if you're looking for a break from the big-truck norm."—Ranked #5 out of 6 Full-Size Trucks

1. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T Base Output RWD (Double Cab)
- Base Price: $40,090
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 348
- Torque: 405 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,095 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 8,300 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,940 lbs
It's crazy to think that the Tundra's base-spec 3.4-liter turbocharged V6, which can only be found in the entry-level SR trim, still cranks out nearly 350 horsepower and over 400 pound-feet of torque. That's the base engine! Anyway, the SR Double Cab 4x2 is actually quite appealing as a work-truck version of the Tundra, delivering the highest payload capacity in the lineup while being the easiest of all Tundras on your wallet. The SR is not eligible for the larger 32.2-gallon gas tank, though, which becomes optional on the SR5 and is standard from the Limited on up.
2. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T Base Output RWD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $42,140
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 348
- Torque: 405 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,095 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 8,300 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,830 lbs
CrewMax is Toyota's name for the Tundra's full-fledged crew cab, which is essentially a stretched Double Cab with a lot more rear legroom. The SR CrewMax Standard Bed (6.5-ft bed) captured here is subject to our general recommendation regarding the SR trim: Skip it and get at least the high-output version of the turbo 3.4-liter V6, which busts through the SR's 8,300-pound towing maximum.
3. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T Base Output 4WD (Double Cab)
- Base Price: $43,090
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 348
- Torque: 405 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,380 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 8,300 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,885 lbs
The only Tundra trim with the base 348-horsepower version of the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 is the SR, which is captured here in its Double Cab Standard Bed (6.5-ft) 4WD configuration. Towing remains limited due to the base trim and engine, so we'd want to shell out some more dollars in return for something closer to the Tundra's max towing capacity.
4. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T Base Output 4WD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $45,140
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 348
- Torque: 405 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,390 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 8,300 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,820 lbs
If you want a 4x4 Tundra CrewMax, why limit yourself to the SR trim level? It's the one with the lower-output engine and the limited tow rating. Just say no.
5. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T High Output RWD (Double Cab)
- Base Price: $45,960
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 389
- Torque: 479 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,095 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 12,000 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,940 lbs
Boom! Step up to the Tundra's cheapest variant with the higher-output 3.4-liter turbo V6 — the SR5 Double Cab Standard Bed 4x2, which maps directly to this data — and you unlock the highest towing capacity in the entire lineup, as well as the highest payload (tied for first in payload, technically, with the base SR trim of this configuration). If you just want the Tundra that'll do the hardest work for the least amount of cash, you've found it right here. Or swap in the long bed, if you prefer, and you'll still have max towing of 11,370 lbs and a max payload of 1,875 lbs in SR5 trim. Higher trims tend to shed some of those max capacities due to their luxuries and higher weights.
6. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T High Output RWD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $48,010
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 389
- Torque: 479 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,160 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 11,400 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,830 lbs
Opting for the higher-output turbo V6 is something we'd recommend to any Tundra shopper who's considering the base SR trim and its lower-output engine. The SR5 Crew Max delineated here — equipped with the 5.5-foot short bed by default — is near the top of the Tundra scale for both max towing and max payload, whereas the SR Crew Max equivalent does fine on payload but trails in towing by 3,100 pounds.
7. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T High Output 4WD (Double Cab)
- Base Price: $48,960
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 389
- Torque: 479 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,380 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 11,200 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,885 lbs
Adding 4WD predictably takes a bite out of both towing capacity and payload capacity, but you're still north of 11,000 pounds of max towing in the SR5 Double Cab 4x4 with the 6.5-foot bed. Even the Limited trim of this configuration — the highest trim where you'll find a Double Cab — comfortably clears 11,000 lbs on the towing front and 1,800 lbs of max payload. By the way, if you want the Tundra Double Cab Long Bed, note that the SR5 is the highest trim that offers it, which means it's the only trim that lets you pair the long bed with the higher-output turbo V6.
8. 2025 Toyota Tundra 3.4T High Output 4WD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $51,010
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 389
- Torque: 479 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,390 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 11,160 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,820 lbs
The Tundra CrewMax 4x4 with the 5.5-foot short bed is a popular configuration, starting here with the SR5 trim. Towing and payload maximums are within shouting distance of the Tundra's lineup-wide maxes, while occupants are treated to a cabin that's on par with those of luxury SUVs. The 6.5-foot standard bed can generally be specified on the CrewMax 4x4 instead of the short bed, with incremental losses in towing and payload.
9. 2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid RWD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $58,005
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 437
- Torque: 583 lb-ft
- Weight: 5,710 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 11,450 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,680 lbs
Available only with the CrewMax cab style, and only from the Limited trim on up, the Tundra Hybrid surrenders some towing and payload capacity to its non-hybrid (and cheaper) stablemates, as well as a fraction of an inch of ground clearance. It wins on fuel economy, though, and being a Limited at the least, it comes standard with the 32.2-gallon gas tank that's optional on SR5 and unavailable on SR. Note that if you want the full 1,680 pounds of payload capacity, you'll have to opt for the Hybrid Limited RWD with the 6.5-foot bed at additional cost — the Hybrid Limited RWD with the standard 5.5-foot bed tops out at 1,655 lbs of payload — and you'll lose 100 pounds of towing capacity in the deal. Also note that the maximums given here are for the Limited RWD, i.e. the entry point into the Hybrid lineup; as you get into higher trims with more luxuries, those limits will generally go down a bit.
10. 2025 Toyota Tundra Hybrid 4WD (CrewMax)
- Base Price: $61,005
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.4-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 437
- Torque: 583 lb-ft
- Weight: 6,010 lbs
- Length: 233.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 11,175 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,665 lbs
The cheapest way into a Tundra Hybrid 4x4 is the Limited trim with the 5.5-foot short bed, but that's not the form in which the Tundra Hybrid 4x4 achieves its max towing and payload capacities — or not quite, at least. Although the Hybrid Limited Short Bed 4x4 can tow up to 11,170 pounds and carry up to 1,605 pounds in its bed, it's outdone by the Hybrid Limited Long Bed 4x4 on payload (1,655 lbs) and by the TRD Pro on max towing (11,175 lbs). If you get the TRD Pro, you're also signing up for an off-road-focused truck that gets slightly worse fuel economy at 19 mpg combined (18 city/20 hwy), and you'll be paying considerably more.
