Is the 2025 Ford Ranger a Good Truck?
"Offering an agreeable balance of ride and handling, the Ranger also delights the right foot with its optional turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, which is easily the most capable power plant in this class. Its towing and payload ratings likewise come up aces. Ford checked all the boxes this time, although we don't think the Ranger is particularly attractive aside from the burly Raptor off-roader. But to each their own. Back on that optional V6 for a moment: for the prices Toyota's putting on higher Tacoma trims (especially the hybrid-powered ones), we'd take a Ranger V6 in a heartbeat. Just sayin'."—Ranked #2 out of 7 Midsize Trucks
Which 2025 Ford Ranger Should I Buy?

1. 2025 Ford Ranger 2.3T Rear-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $33,080
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.3-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 310 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,203 lbs
- Length: 210.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,500 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,805 lbs
Acceleration numbers were not readily available for the Ranger 2.3T as of this writing, but on paper, the Ranger's operating at a deficit relative to the Colorado 2.7T TurboMax, which has a lower starting price and gives you far more horsepower and torque. The Ford has a slight edge when it comes to maximum payload capacity, though.
2. 2025 Ford Ranger 2.3T Four-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $36,725
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.3-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 310 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,415 lbs
- Length: 210.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,500 lbs
- Payload Capacity: N/A
Adding 4WD leaves the Ranger 2.3T's fuel economy estimates virtually unchanged, so the only question is whether you want to pony up a few more grand to have that versatility.
3. 2025 Ford Ranger 2.7T V6 Four-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $41,790
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.7-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 315
- Torque: 400 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.6 sec
- Weight: 4,415 lbs
- Length: 210.6 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,500 lbs
- Payload Capacity: N/A
The Ranger V6 comes standard with 4WD, and its twin-turbo 2.7-liter engine is delightfully powerful and torquey. Although Chevy's 2.7-liter turbo four competes well on paper with its 310 hp and 430 lb-ft, the Ranger V6 lays waste to GM's midsize trucks and every other rival, for that matter, including all Tacoma configurations. If the Ranger Raptor seems a little too extra to you, know that the Ranger V6 nips at its heels acceleration-wise while being much more affordable and subtle.
4. 2025 Ford Ranger Raptor (3.0T Four-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $55,820
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 405
- Torque: 430 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.3 sec
- Weight: 5,325 lbs
- Length: 210.9 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,510 lbs
- Payload Capacity: 1,411 lbs
The four-cylinder Ranger eats the Colorado's dust when it comes to engine output numbers, but the Raptor flips that script. The Colorado's top off-road trims, the ZR2 and ZR2 Bison, use the same four-cylinder as the ordinary models, whereas the Ranger Raptor gets an exclusive 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 that thoroughly spanks its Chevy rivals. Of course, the Ranger Raptor also gets a wide variety of off-roady upgrades to do justice to the Raptor name. It's a fantastic truck if you can get your hands on one.
