The gas-powered 2500 HD is no slouch, to put it mildly. If you're averse to the diesel V8 for whatever reason, the 6.6-liter gas V8 will almost certainly get your jobs done.
The 3500 HD gives you another 700-plus pounds of payload capacity even in its base form, plus incrementally more towing capacity.
As with the diesel 3500 HD, the gas version offers a cheap upgrade to the DRW chassis. Unlike the diesel, though, the gas model isn't eligible for the trailering upgrade that unlocks mega towing capacity, so the gas 3500 HD DRW can actually only tow about as much as the SRW. The big reason to OK the $1,200 upgrade to DRW is payload capacity, which skyrockets to 7,234 pounds, nearly 3,000 pounds more than the SRW's max.
The diesel option tacks on about $10k, but to us, it's more than worth it. Go big or go home; get the 975 lb-ft of torque.
Pairing the 3500 HD SRW with diesel power cranks up the towing capacity to more than 22,000 pounds. You'll need the dual rear wheel setup if you want to tow more than that.
It's surprisingly cheap to upgrade from SRW to DRW in the Silverado 3500 HD — only a grand or so. The 2WD regular cab is the configuration that unlocks the 36,000-pound towing capacity Chevy trumpets in its marketing materials.
