The Civic is a standout in this class, although the base 2.0-liter engine stands out for the wrong reason — it makes the Civic downright slow by current standards. The Jetta has a new lease on life, thanks to a 2025 refresh that artfully sharpened this aging model's styling. You'll feel the Jetta's age when you interact with its 8-inch touchscreen, which is smaller and less crisp than most rival units, while the new-for-2025 touch-based climate controls are a case of tech overload — the previous three-knob interface was superior. Notably, a fresh new 10.5-inch touchscreen debuts for 2025 — it's optional on SE and standard on the higher trims, but unavailable on the base LE. Like some rivals here, the Corolla is also offered as a hybrid, which sends the mpg to the moon but adds nearly a second to the 0-60 sprint (9.0 seconds versus closer to 8 for the standard Corolla). Redesigned for 2025 and now equipped exclusively with the hybrid powertrain, the Camry goes all-in on Toyota's proven hybrid technology, and we're generally here for it. The Camry Hybrid was arguably the pick of the previous litter anyway, as it paired out-of-this-world fuel economy with plenty of acceleration for most situations. The new Camry is mostly the same under the hood, gaining a handful of horsepower and shedding just 1-2 mpg, with the key addition of optional all-wheel drive to give snow-belt shoppers another reason to buy. Be that as it may, the entry-level C300 acquits itself well in this segment, nailing the one-two punch of swift acceleration and frugal fuel economy. Inside is where the A5 really raises the bar, boasting a screen-tastic dashboard that may seem like tech overload, especially if you get the Prestige trim with its separate 10.9-inch passenger display. Lexus IS

The current IS is undeniably ancient, having debuted so long ago — 2014 — that it's almost hard to believe. Thing is, Lexus got a lot of things right back then, including the superlatively comfortable front seats (though the rears are decidedly tight), the enduringly attractive shape and the strong 3.5-liter V6 engine in the IS 350 model. In the years since, the IS has seen the addition of an unremarkable turbocharged four-cylinder engine for the entry-level IS 300, as well as the introduction of the V8-powered IS 500, which is a special treat for a select few. Overall, there's so much fundamental goodness in this platform, and so much resale value and reputational reliability on its side, that we just can't quit it. The S60's elegantly understated styling might be its strongest feature, but there's also a rational case to be made for this Volvo. To wit, its fuel economy is quite frugal in standard non-hybrid form, and the S60 T8 plug-in hybrid is a unique offering with its 40 miles of electric range and formidable acceleration. The base engine's performance is uninspired, however, while the smallish, portrait-style central touchscreen is roughly a decade old and looks the part. There's no doubt that the S60 is a pleasant car, but it's far from a class leader, although the T8 PHEV does stand out as both a special machine and, at around $52k to start, a surprisingly good value. Cadillac CT4

We don't recommend the CT4's base 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, as its fuel economy and refinement are behind the times. The optional 2.7-liter four, however, packs a serious punch and is barely less efficient. It's the engine to have if you're considering the standard CT4, but most rivals are still more compelling in the final analysis. After all, the CT4 is fundamentally an evolution of the discontinued ATS, which always stood out for its nimble handling, but also for its cramped backseat and small trunk, attributes that the CT4 inherited. Acura Integra

The fact that the Integra is based on the Honda Civic would be irrelevant if it were a much better car than the Honda. But that's not the case. Acura needed to do more than just carry over the Civic's powertrains (and excessive road noise) if it wanted to be truly competitive against luxury-brand rivals. The touchscreen, too, carries over from the Civic and lacks the real estate and crisp graphics of this segment's best. The Integra's fuel economy is strong, but here's a pro tip — the Civic Hybrid Hatchback is far more efficient, and it also handily out-accelerates the Integra, all for many thousands less. We'd have a more favorable view of the Integra if Acura had swapped out the Civic's CVT for a more elegant transmission, but that CVT is the only automatic the Integra offers, which intensifies the economy-car vibe. The E-Class reigns supreme, as it should — Mercedes has been doing this midsize luxury sedan thing longer than just about anyone. But the E's recent redesign clarified that Benz's expertise in this segment really does stand alone. Even the base four-cylinder E350 is a very satisfying drive, but the E450 is a delectable upgrade with its turbocharged inline-6, and the fuel economy is delightful either way. On the road, the E-Class has usurped the 5 Series' throne, striking a perfect balance between athleticism and ride comfort. Passenger space is just right front and rear, while the trunk is similarly capacious without being excessive. Prefer an SUV-like cargo hold?
