The Best Hybrid Cars of 2025

Last Updated Oct 2, 2026

Looking for a hybrid that won't be found in our Hybrid SUV Rankings? We've got you covered. Here are all of the new non-SUV models with hybrid powertrains, sorted into competitive segments and ranked top to bottom. Learn about how we rate vehicles.

Best Compact Hybrid Cars

Price Range: $23,825–$28,950

Ranked Models: 4

Toyota Prius ($28,350+)
Honda Civic Hybrid ($28,950+)
Hyundai Elantra Hybrid ($25,100+)
Toyota Corolla Hybrid ($23,825+)

Covering both sedans and hatchbacks, this segment shows you all the non-SUV options if you're looking for a small car with a hybrid powertrain. Excellent fuel economy is a given, of course, but you can increasingly expect sprightly acceleration, too.

MD RATING 8.4/10

Toyota Prius

Base Price: $28,350
MPG Combined: 52–57
Horsepower: 194–220
Length: 181.1 in
Cargo Capacity: 20.3–23.8 cu ft

Boasting head-turning styling — yes, we just said that about a Prius — and respectably swift acceleration (another Prius first), Toyota's iconic hybrid hatch stands out in this segment and competes closely with the hatchback version of the Civic Hybrid. The Honda is quicker, but the Toyota is the undisputed fuel-economy champ, and we'd give it the edge in the looks department, too. The Prius also has the advantage of literally decades of proven hybrid reliability on its side, which is a lot for any upstart to overcome. Shoot, it even offers all-wheel drive, and although the pricier Prius Plug-In Hybrid comes only with front-wheel drive, it compensates with slightly more power (220 hp vs 194) and an impressive 45 miles of electric range. MD RATING 8.2/10

Honda Civic Hybrid

Base Price: $28,950
MPG Combined: 48–49
Horsepower: 200
Length: 179.0–184.0 in
Cargo Capacity: 14.8–24.5 cu ft

Offered as a sedan or a hatchback, the Civic Hybrid brings some serious credentials to this segment. Not many cars offer both 200-horsepower performance and a realistic shot at averaging 50 mpg. We give a slight nod to the Prius because the reliability of its hybrid powertrain has been proven over many years, whereas the Civic Hybrid's powertrain has less history. The Honda has a bigger backseat, though, and the Civic Hybrid Hatchback matches the Toyota's cargo-area versatility. It's clearly the toughest rival the Prius has ever had. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.3/10

Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Base Price: $25,100
MPG Combined: 54
Horsepower: 139
Length: 185.4 in
Cargo Capacity: 14.2 cu ft

The Elantra Hybrid will open any hybrid shopper's eyes with its peak figure of 54 mpg combined, which incidentally goes with the entry-level Blue model; the pricier versions are marginally less efficient. But we're still talking 50 mpg in any case, and the Hyundai continues to delight inside with its cutting-edge widescreen infotainment module and spacious seating. Leisurely acceleration is the main drawback, but the Elantra Hybrid is also more affordable than the top cars here. See Full Details >

MD RATING 6.8/10

Toyota Corolla Hybrid

Base Price: $23,825
MPG Combined: 44–47
Horsepower: 138
Length: 182.3 in
Cargo Capacity: 13.1 cu ft

The Corolla Hybrid's acceleration stands out in this company, but not in a good way. You're giving up a lot of swiftness if you pick this Toyota over the competition — even the Elantra Hybrid pips it by more than half a second to 60 mph. Moreover, the Corolla's backseat is relatively cramped, so that's two significant strikes against it. What's the good news? Mega fuel economy, of course, at an appealingly low base price. The Corolla Hybrid definitely checks those boxes. But there's no doubt that it asks for more compromises than its rivals in this segment. See Full Details >

Best Midsize Hybrid Sedans

Price Range: $28,400–$41,440

Ranked Models: 4

Toyota Camry ($28,400+)
Honda Accord Hybrid ($33,655+)
Hyundai Sonata Hybrid ($31,000+)
Toyota Crown ($41,440+)

Increasingly the norm among midsize four-doors, hybrids make a lot of sense now that they've got decent power to go along with their superior fuel economy. They won't necessarily break the bank, either; for the most part, midsize hybrid sedans aren't much more expensive than their conventional counterparts.

MD RATING 8.5/10

Toyota Camry

Base Price: $28,400
MPG Combined: 50–51
Horsepower: 225–232
Length: 193.5 in
Cargo Capacity: 15.1 cu ft

What's this, a regular Camry thrown in with the hybrids? Well, as of the 2025 redesign, every Camry is now a hybrid, so Toyota simply dropped the "Hybrid" from the name. As such, the Camry now does battle against both non-hybrid family sedans and the hybrid crew assembled here. It's certainly got the numbers to be the best, from its gaudy 50-mpg fuel economy to its impressive sub-7-second sprint to 60 mph. You can even get all-wheel drive if you want it, and the overhauled interior impresses with its newfound sophistication and available 12-3-inch touchscreen. Remarkably, the Camry also has the lowest starting price in this segment. See Full Details >

MD RATING 8.3/10

2025 Honda Accord Sport L driving front view

Honda Accord Hybrid

Base Price: $33,655
MPG Combined: 44–48
Horsepower: 204
Length: 195.7 in
Cargo Capacity: 16.7 cu ft

The Accord Hybrid is surprisingly quick — 6.5 seconds to 60 mph — and unsurprisingly very frugal at the gas pump. We continue to struggle with the current Accord's ungainly proportions, but putting styling aside, it's hard to find a weakness amid all of this sedan's strengths. One minor complaint is that the hybrid-only Camry is about $5k cheaper to start, so it's possible to get into the Toyota for a lot less coin. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.8/10

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

Base Price: $31,000
MPG Combined: 47
Horsepower: 192
Length: 193.3 in
Cargo Capacity: 15.6 cu ft

The Sonata Hybrid certainly hits the numbers on paper, at least in the highway mpg column. It passes 50 mpg there, but its city rating is down in the mid-40s, which is unusual, as hybrids tend to shine in the city. But it's still great fuel economy however you look at it, and the Hyundai has the added advantage of an excellent warranty. We also tip our cap to the widescreen infotainment module, which makes the Sonata Hybrid feel fully up-to-date on the tech front. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.5/10

Toyota Crown

Base Price: $41,440
MPG Combined: 30–41
Horsepower: 236–340
Length: 196.1 in
Cargo Capacity: 15.2 cu ft

The Crown is a hard one to categorize, as its standard configuration employs essentially the same powertrain as the now hybrid-only Camry sedan — but its styling and features have upscale aspirations. There's also the Crown Hybrid Max variant, which starts in the mid-$50s (gulp!) and pumps out roughly 100 extra horsepower while sacrificing around 10 mpg combined. We find the Crown's pricing hard to justify when the Camry delivers even better fuel economy for less coin, but it's nice to have options, we suppose. See Full Details >

Best Small Plug-In Hybrids

Price Range: $33,375–$34,490

Ranked Models: 2

Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid ($33,375+)
Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid ($34,490+)

We had to whip up this segment expressly for the Prius and the Niro PHEV, because hatchbacks and SUVs typically don't get to mingle. But these are really the only two genuinely small plug-in hybrids to consider, so it's only fair that they go head-to-head.

MD RATING 8.6/10

2025 Toyota Prius PHEV parked front view

Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $33,375
EV Range: 45 mi
MPG Combined: 52
Horsepower: 220
Length: 181.1 in
Cargo Capacity: 20.3 cu ft

Toyota knocked it out of the park with the current Prius, and the PHEV version is a home run in its own right. Surprisingly affordable, the Prius PHEV (formerly known as Prius Prime) boasts a 6.6 kW onboard charger, which doubles the charging speed of both its predecessor and the rival Niro PHEV. It's also significantly quicker to accelerate than the already-quick standard Prius, and it delivers largely the same 50-mpg fuel economy once its generous EV range runs out. Throw in great resale value, proven reliability, hatchback versatility...the list goes on. All things considered, the Prius PHEV is one of the best cars on sale today. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.5/10

Kia Niro Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $34,490
EV Range: 34 mi
MPG Combined: 48
Horsepower: 180
Length: 174.0 in
Cargo Capacity: 54.6 cu ft
Towing Capacity: N/A

The Niro PHEV would probably be having a grand time if it weren't for that pesky Prius. You get plenty of EV range here for most around-town tasks, and unlike the standard Niro hybrid, which struggles when acceleration is needed, the Niro PHEV can zip around just fine. It's not that there's anything particularly wrong with this Kia; it's just up against a juggernaut. But that means you might be able to score a favorable deal on one, and the Niro PHEV will reward you with a higher seating position than the Toyota, as well as a more generous cargo bay. Best Hybrid Minivans

Price Range: $39,185–$51,055

Ranked Models: 3

Toyota Sienna ($39,185+)
Kia Carnival Hybrid ($40,500+)
Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid ($51,055+)

Hybrids are becoming more and more popular as shoppers wrestle with the transition to electrification, and minivans seem like a natural home for hybrid technology. You don't want to worry about EV charging stops on family road trips, but you also want to maximize your fuel economy. So, which hybrid minivan is the best? If that's your question, we've got the answer.

MD RATING 8.2/10

Toyota Sienna

Base Price: $39,185
MPG Combined: 35–36
Horsepower: 245
Length: 203.7 in
Cargo Capacity: 101.0 cu ft

You're looking at the most fuel-efficient minivan on the market, albeit not by a wide margin; the Carnival Hybrid is nipping at the 2025 Toyota Sienna's heels. But Toyota has pulled a neat trick here in redefining the Sienna as the efficiency specialist, leaving its hot-rod, V6-powered past behind. That V6 was one of Toyota's best engines — Lotus even borrowed a version of it for the Evora sports car — and it made the Sienna feel effortlessly quick. Nonetheless, the hybrid powertrain does have some spunk, and its mid-30s fuel economy will likely be more than enough compensation for the diminished thrust. If you don't need to maximize cargo space inside your van, the Sienna makes a strong case for itself. That’s especially true if you want all-wheel drive, which the Sienna offers and the competition doesn’t (yes, the Pacifica offers AWD, but only in non-hybrid form). See Full Details >

MD RATING 8.1/10

Kia Carnival Hybrid

Base Price: $40,500
MPG Combined: 33
Horsepower: 242
Length: 203.0 in
Cargo Capacity: 145.1 cu ft

The 2025 Kia Carnival Hybrid generally competes well against the hybrid-only Sienna, which is its primary rival. But there's an ace up the Kia's sleeve that you might not be aware of: its automatic transmission is a conventional six-speed unit, which means it doesn't give you any of the annoying CVT-sourced revving and droning that's par for the course in the Toyota. It also delivers the massive cargo capacity that minivan buyers tend to expect, whereas the Sienna maxes out at about 30 percent less space due to its fixed second-row seats. We can't ignore the proven reliability of the Sienna's hybrid powertrain, which has been racking up trouble-free miles in one form or another since the 2000s. But if you're inclined to roll the dice on that front, the Carnival Hybrid merits strong consideration — and the whole point of Kia's generous warranty, of course, is to give you that extra peace of mind. See Full Details >

MD RATING 6.9/10

Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $51,055
EV Range: 32 mi
MPG Combined: 30
Horsepower: 260
Length: 204.3 in
Cargo Capacity: 140.5 cu ft

Still the only PHEV on Planet Minivan, the 2025 Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid delivers a unique value proposition with its 32 miles of all-electric range. Plug in every time you get home (you don't even need a fancy charger; a regular outlet will do) and you could go weeks or even months without refueling, provided you're just puttering around town. That's the good news; the bad news is that the current Pacifica has been around for a lot of years now, whereas its rivals are considerably newer. That's an age gap you can see and feel, and don't forget that the Pacifica PHEV's starting price is way up there compared to other minivans. See Full Details >

Best Midsize Hybrid Luxury Sedans

Price Range: $41,440–$43,440

Ranked Models: 2

Lexus ES Hybrid ($43,440+)
Toyota Crown ($41,440+)

Hybrids are increasingly desirable across the price spectrum, and luxury sedans are no exception. Why wouldn't you want to pair the peerless fuel economy of a hybrid with traditional midsize luxury sedan traits like a smooth, quiet ride and a spacious cabin? Fortunately, you can.

MD RATING 7.5/10

Lexus ES Hybrid

Base Price: $43,440
MPG Combined: 44
Horsepower: 215
Length: 195.9 in
Cargo Capacity: 13.9 cu ft

If there's one model that's synonymous with this segment, it's the ES Hybrid, which is enduringly popular thanks to its excellent fuel economy, rewarding refinement and peerless reputation for reliability. You could save some cash and get a hybrid-powered Camry, but test-drive an ES and you'll understand that its niceness is on another level. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.5/10

Toyota Crown

Base Price: $41,440
MPG Combined: 30–41
Horsepower: 236–340
Length: 196.1 in
Cargo Capacity: 15.2 cu ft

The Toyota-Lexus family is all ate up with hybrid sedans, and it can be hard to keep them straight. Toyota isn't a luxury brand, of course, but the Crown aspires to get consideration from luxury shoppers with its daring styling and upmarket feature set. Under the hood, the entry-level Crown utilizes largely the same powertrain as the Lexus ES Hybrid, while the Crown Hybrid Max pumps up the volume with a 340-horsepower turbo hybrid power plant that features a conventional automatic transmission for a more precise feel. It's hard to see the Crown ever becoming more than a marginal player in Toyota's hybrid portfolio, but should you consider it alongside the ES Hybrid? Absolutely. See Full Details >

Best Midsize Luxury PHEV Sedans

Price Range: $65,650–$88,000

Ranked Models: 3

Mercedes-Benz AMG E53 ($88,000+)
BMW 5 Series Plug-In Hybrid ($73,400+)
Volvo S90 Plug-In Hybrid ($65,650+)

If you're shopping for a midsize luxury sedan, why wouldn't you want the added versatility of a plug-in hybrid, which gives you meaningful all-electric range for local driving? Everyone likes to save on gas, but it's not just the money; it's also the time you won't have to spend standing around while your tank fills up. These accomplished sedans really can give you the best of both worlds.

MD RATING 8.5/10

Mercedes-Benz AMG E53

Base Price: $88,000
EV Range: 42 mi
MPG Combined: N/A
Horsepower: 577
Length: 194.9 in
Cargo Capacity: 13.1 cu ft

The AMG E53 is in the odd position of being both a high-performance sport sedan and a plug-in hybrid, which means it's technically right at home in this segment. Delivering 42 miles of electric range along with an eye-popping 577 horsepower in hybrid mode, this Benz is a most intriguing collision of worlds. We're already big fans of the current E-Class, but this might just be the best version yet. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.9/10

BMW 5 Series Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $73,400
EV Range: 33 mi
MPG Combined: 24
Horsepower: 483
Length: 199.2 in
Cargo Capacity: 18.4 cu ft

BMW's 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid sedan may not be pretty, but there's some impressive engineering under that hood. We're talking 0-60 in about 4 seconds in hybrid mode, plus 33 miles of all-electric range. Still, that's not a lot of EV range these days, especially for a new model, and 24 mpg combined is especially unimpressive when the non-hybrid 540i xDrive checks in at 28. See Full Details >

MD RATING 7.2/10

2025 Volvo S90 Recharge T8 PHEV parked front view

Volvo S90 Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $65,650
EV Range: 38 mi
MPG Combined: 30
Horsepower: 455
Length: 200.4 in
Cargo Capacity: 13.5 cu ft

The good news is that the S90 T8 gives you 38 miles of electric range and sprints to 60 mph in about four and a half seconds. The bad news is that the S90 is still fundamentally the same car that debuted forever ago in 2016, whereas its luxury-brand rivals have long since moved on to newer platforms and technologies. There's also the matter of the S90's needlessly stretched proportions, a function of its primary purpose as a chauffeur-driven car in China, which happens to be where Geely-owned Volvo builds it. We're generally Volvo fans, but this particular model is a misfit despite its impressive stats. See Full Details >

Best Full-Size Luxury PHEV Sedans

Price Range: $108,000–$128,200

Ranked Models: 3

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-In Hybrid ($128,200+)
Porsche Panamera Plug-In Hybrid ($115,500+)
BMW 7 Series Plug-In Hybrid ($108,000+)

Perhaps it's the ultimate luxury to have your choice of silent electric propulsion around town and authoritative hybrid acceleration on the highway. These sedans can go weeks or months between refueling stops if you're just running errands on battery power, or they can embark on limitless road trips thanks to their hybrid powertrains.

MD RATING 8.6/10

2025 Mercedes-Benz S580e PHEV driving front view

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $128,200
EV Range: 46 mi
MPG Combined: 23
Horsepower: 503–791
Length: 208.2 in
Cargo Capacity: 8.1–10.7 cu ft

How many times have we seen it over the years? BMW makes a move and then Mercedes counters it, or vice versa. Well, here we are again, and the Mercedes counter this time looks very strong indeed. Compared to the 750e xDrive PHEV's 35 miles of electric range and 483-horsepower total output, the S580e 4MATIC ups the ante with 46 miles and 503 hp, respectively. Oh, right, and there's also the AMG S63, which is now a PHEV as well. It drops you down to 16 miles of electric range but compensates with a metric boatload of power and torque. Have it your way. See Full Details >

MD RATING 8.3/10

2025 Porsche Panamera 4S E-Hybrid driving front view

Porsche Panamera Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $115,500
EV Range: 40 mi
MPG Combined: N/A
Horsepower: 463–771
Length: 198.9–199.0 in
Cargo Capacity: 44.6 cu ft

Like many Porsche products, the plug-in Panamera E-Hybrid lineup leaves us nodding sagely and saying, "Yep. Pretty much nailed it." The first question about a plug-in hybrid is often how much electric range it has, and the Panamera PHEVs have a good answer: figure 35-40 miles before the gas engine kicks on, which should be enough to avoid refueling for weeks or even months, if that's your goal. Okay, how about acceleration? The worst 0-60 time in the lineup is 3.9 seconds, which the top-shelf Turbo S E-Hybrid whittles down to 2.8 seconds. There's also the PHEV-exclusive Active Ride suspension, which enhances ride comfort and uses independent air springs to counteract squat, dive and body roll. If the price doesn't scare you away, there's little else here to quibble with. See Full Details >

MD RATING 8.2/10

BMW 7 Series Plug-In Hybrid

Base Price: $108,000
EV Range: 34 mi
MPG Combined: 25
Horsepower: 483
Length: 212.2 in
Cargo Capacity: 18.5 cu ft

Boasting about 35 miles of all-electric range, the 750e xDrive PHEV does just fine as an EV until you need all 483 horsepower, which is available with a flick of your right foot. As for the blocky styling, we're not fans, but to each their own. See Full Details >
