Is the 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Plug-In Hybrid a Good Car?
"How many times have we seen it over the years? BMW makes a move and then Mercedes counters it, or vice versa. Well, here we are again, and the Mercedes counter this time looks very strong indeed. Compared to the 750e xDrive PHEV's 35 miles of electric range and 483-horsepower total output, the S580e 4MATIC ups the ante with 46 miles and 503 hp, respectively. Oh, right, and there's also the AMG S63, which is now a PHEV as well. It drops you down to 16 miles of electric range but compensates with a metric boatload of power and torque. Have it your way."—Ranked #1 out of 3 Full-Size Luxury PHEV Sedans

1. 2025 Mercedes-Benz S580e 4MATIC (3.0T Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $128,200
- EV Range: 46 mi
- MPG Combined: 23
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6

The S580e plug-in hybrid's parlor trick is its impressive all-electric range, which is EPA-estimated at 46 miles. There are compromises, however, including about 800 extra pounds of complexity and a trunk that's smaller by a third.
2. 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG S63 E Performance (4.0T Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $186,200
- EV Range: 16 mi
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 791
- Torque: 1,055 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.3 sec

Now available only as a plug-in hybrid, the AMG S63 comes up way short of its lesser S580e sibling in terms of all-electric range. So what's the point of this barge? Power, of course — lots of it, and even more torque. There's also AMG's excellent twin-turbo V8 stuffed in there amongst the hybrid hardware, so you get a little V8 rumble that's absent in the six-cylinder S580e.
