Is the 2025 BMW 7 Series a Good Car?
"We haven't heard anyone argue that the latest 7 Series is pretty, but it sure is imposing, and you can count on the engineering excellence under the hood. In fact, the base 740i model with its turbo inline-6 engine has easily the best fuel economy in this segment, yet it also delivers delicious acceleration. That's as much 7 Series as anyone needs, but the V8-powered 760i will understandably tempt those with heavier feet. We honestly didn't think this bluntly styled sedan would be a success, but it's clear that people appreciate its high-riding character on the road, which splits the difference between traditional low-slung sedans and elevated SUVs. There's also something to be said for making a fashion statement — there are a lot of wallflowers in this segment, and the 7 isn't one of them."—Ranked #2 out of 6 Full-Size Luxury Sedans

1. 2025 BMW 740i (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $97,300
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 375
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.2 sec
- Weight: 4,720 lbs
- Length: 212.2 in
The entry-level 7 Series is powered by one of the best engines in the business.
2. 2025 BMW 740i xDrive (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $100,300
- MPG Combined: 27
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 375
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.9 sec
- Weight: 4,855 lbs
- Length: 212.2 in
Not surprisingly, adding all-wheel drive to BMW's excellent B58 turbocharged inline-6 hardly hurts fuel economy at all. It's a magical engine, as also evidenced by the fact that it can whisk this massive sedan to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
3. 2025 BMW 750e xDrive (Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $108,000
- MPG Combined: 25
- EV Range: 34 mi
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 483
- Torque: 516 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.6 sec
- Weight: 5,635 lbs
- Length: 212.2 in
The plug-in 7 Series' weight balloons to more than 5,600 pounds, but with 483 horses on tap, you won't be hurting for acceleration. As for the all-electric range, 34 miles is certainly a useful amount, but the S-Class PHEV puts that to shame.
4. 2025 BMW 7 Series 760i xDrive (4.4T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $122,400
- MPG Combined: 20
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.4-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 536
- Torque: 553 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.1 sec
- Weight: 5,095 lbs
- Length: 212.2 in
As nice as the standard inline-6 is in the 740i, the 760i's twin-turbo V8 is a whole new ballgame. One drive in a 760 and you'll feel like any lesser 7 Series is uncivilized. Fair warning.
