Is the 2025 BMW 5 Series a Good Car?
"The 5 Series continues to hold appeal as essentially a short-wheelbase 7 Series, which means plenty of comfort, tech and high-speed composure, not to mention a big trunk. Perhaps BMW was primarily focused on the all-electric i5 side of this ledger, though, because the gas-powered 5 Series lineup doesn't feel that special anymore. Nonetheless, the 5er's combination of acceleration and fuel economy is virtually unrivaled in this class, no matter which engine you choose. It's hard to think of the new 5 Series as a sport sedan in the traditional 5er mold, but it's certainly got world-class luxury and engineering on its side."—Ranked #2 out of 9 Midsize Luxury Sedans
Which 2025 BMW 5 Series Should I Buy?

Scroll to:
1. 2025 BMW 530i (2.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $58,700
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.9 sec
- Weight: 4,041 lbs
- Length: 199.2 in
The four-cylinder 530i won't be particularly exciting, but its skills are admirably polished across the board.
2. 2025 BMW 530i xDrive (2.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $61,000
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.8 sec
- Weight: 4,158 lbs
- Length: 199.2 in
Adding all-wheel drive miraculously doesn't seem to have any effect on the 530i's performance — fuel economy is unchanged, and 0-60 acceleration actually improves by a tenth. The 530i xDrive weighs significantly more, though, which is bound to show up in real-world fuel economy and acceleration to at least some extent.
3. 2025 BMW 540i xDrive (3.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $65,800
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 375
- Torque: 398 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.4 sec
- Weight: 4,370 lbs
- Length: 199.2 in
We can't say enough good things about BMW's B58 turbocharged inline-6 engine, which works magic as usual in the 540i xDrive. The combination of swift acceleration and frugal fuel economy is perhaps unmatched anywhere in the automotive world.
4. 2025 BMW 550e xDrive (3.0T Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $73,400
- MPG Combined: 24
- EV Range: 33 mi (est.)
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 483
- Torque: 516 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.1 sec
- Weight: 4,894 lbs
- Length: 199.2 in
The highly powerful 550e xDrive plug-in hybrid promises to be the quickest 5 Series outside of the M5, leaving aside the electric i5 range. With 33 miles of electric-only range, it's a useful EV errand-runner, too, letting you leave all of that gas in the tank for longer trips.
