What's New for 2025?
The R1S carries over its familiar styling, but there are many changes underneath, starting with Rivian-made electric motors in place of the previous Bosch units. A heat pump is newly standard, as are higher-resolution cameras and improved driver-assistance features. The rear suspension has been massaged to promote more planted cornering, and the three available battery packs are new or revised and generally more efficient. The Dual Max range champ gains 10 more miles this year for a gaudy 410-mile EPA rating; meanwhile, the Tri joins the fray with an incredible combination of 850 horsepower and 371 miles of range. Watch out for the revamped Quad, which now pumps out 1,025 horsepower and can hit 60 mph in a claimed 2.5 seconds. Also, the eight-year battery warranties have been simplified: 120,000 miles for the Standard pack and 150,000 miles for the Large and Max.

Is the 2025 Rivian R1S a Good SUV?
"The R1S shines continuously across acceleration, range, towing capacity, cargo space and off-road capability, while the incredible variety of configurations pumps up its overall score. Our favorite is the Dual Max Performance, which hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and somehow manages to tie for the best range in the lineup at 410 miles. Those are jaw-dropping numbers at any price, making Rivian's $94,900 ask seem like something of a bargain. The R1S isn't overtly luxurious inside, but plenty of people seem to prefer that kind of minimalism (see Tesla, e.g.), and the touchscreen tech interface is so snappy and modern that you won't miss Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. As for the third-row seat, it's plenty spacious for most use cases. This Rivian is simply a stupendous machine that also happens to be an American SUV through and through. Cheers to that."—Ranked #1 out of 11 Large 3-Row Electric SUVs
"The numbers that illustrate the Rivian's otherworldly talents are simply amazing. Zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds? The R1S Quad's got you covered. How about 410 miles of range? The R1S Dual Max checks that box for about $90k, which is a screaming deal for this segment. Throw in mega off-road chops, capable on-road handling and lots of cargo space and you're looking at one of the best all-around vehicles on the market, period."—Ranked #1 out of 7 Premium Luxury Electric SUVs
Which 2025 Rivian R1S Should I Buy?

1. 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Standard
- Base Price: $75,900
- Range: 270 mi
- Battery Capacity: 92.5 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 200 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 533
- Torque: 610 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Weight: 6,532 lbs
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
Right out of the box, the entry-level Rivian R1S Dual Standard is a 533-hp monster (0-60 in 4.5 seconds) with respectable range (270 miles). Notably, you maximize the Dual Standard's range with the larger 22-inch wheels, per the EPA; getting the 20s drops you to 258 miles.
2. 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Large
- Base Price: $82,900
- Range: 329 mi
- Battery Capacity: 109.4 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 533
- Torque: 610 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
The Dual Large has been a sweet spot for many Rivian fans, but it's down 22 miles of range due to a smaller Large battery pack for 2025. Still, 329 miles (with the 22-inch wheels) is a lot of range for a three-row EV with 533 horsepower. If you can have all that plus mega off-road capability for $83k, we'd say that's a fantastic deal.
3. 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Large Performance
- Base Price: $87,900
- Range: 329 mi
- Battery Capacity: 109.4 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 665
- Torque: 829 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.4 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
Adding the Performance package to the R1S Dual Large doesn't change the range or efficiency one iota, yet it knocks a whopping 1.1 seconds off the sprint to 60 mph. The Dual Large is already a great deal at around $83k, but you could argue that the Dual Large Performance is an even greater deal because of the huge acceleration edge it provides for just $5k more.
4. 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Max
- Base Price: $89,900
- Range: 410 mi
- Battery Capacity: 141.5 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 533
- Torque: 610 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
The Dual Max's appeal has increased significantly for 2025 now that the Dual Large has lost 22 miles and the Max has gained 10 with the new battery packs. That's a gap of 80 miles, which is huge, and Rivian now charges $7k for the Max upgrade rather than last year's $10k. We think it's an easy win now for the Max — if you're spending $80k-plus on a luxury SUV, might as well make it $90k and grab those 80 miles.
5. 2025 Rivian R1S Dual Max Performance
- Base Price: $94,900
- Range: 410 mi
- Battery Capacity: 141.5 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 665
- Torque: 829 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.4 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
Just like the Dual Large Performance, the Dual Max Performance improves the R1S's acceleration massively without affecting range or efficiency at all. That Performance package — a standalone option on Rivian's website — is a very tempting $5k upgrade. In fact, the Dual Large Performance is our favorite R1S of them all, because it gives you the best range the R1S has to offer along with supercar-grade acceleration. Sure, the R1S Tri Max is an even quicker supercar at 2.9 seconds to 60 mph versus 3.4 for the Dual Max Performance, but its range rating is about 50 miles lower, and it costs $10k more. Trust us, 3.4 seconds is quick enough, and the extra range and cash will come in handy someday.
6. 2025 Rivian R1S Tri Max
- Base Price: $105,900
- Range: 371 mi
- Battery Capacity: 141.5 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3 electric motors
- Horsepower: 850
- Torque: 1,103 lb-ft
- 0-60: 2.9 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
The R1S Tri Max is a very intriguing variant. You don't often see 850 horsepower and 371 miles of range coexisting in the same vehicle, especially if it's a three-row go-anywhere SUV. Definitely drive the Dual Max, though, because you might find that 533 hp is just fine for your needs, in which case you can save $16k compared to the Tri and have 39 extra miles of range. But will the Tri's supercar-grade acceleration get you hooked? Quite possibly, although that's where the Dual Max Performance — our favorite — comes in. Choices, choices.
7. 2025 Rivian R1S Quad Max
- Base Price: $115,900 (est.)
- Range: N/A
- Battery Capacity: 141.5 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 220 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4 electric motors
- Horsepower: 1,025
- Torque: 1,198 lb-ft
- 0-60: 2.5 sec
- Length: 200.8 in
- Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs
The Quad goes plumb crazy for 2025, crossing into four figures for both horsepower and torque. Zero to 60 in 2.5 seconds? Yeah, it'll do that, and its quad-motor powertrain can manage each wheel's output individually to maximize off-road traction. Range is the question here. The 850-hp R1S Tri gives you a healthy 371 miles with the Max battery pack, but the Quad has to generate its far higher output figures using the same battery. The EPA's range estimate was unavailable as of this writing, but if it drops too far below the Tri's level, we wonder if buyers will defect to the Tri or even the Dual Max Performance.
