Achieving useful range in one of these rigs requires a big battery, and then you have to figure out how to build the interior around that battery, and before you know it, the costs are through the roof. Much progress has been made, however, and while the three-row electric SUVs gathered here are indeed quite expensive, they're also legitimate substitutes for conventional SUVs in terms of range and capabilities. The electric SUVs gathered here offer the versatility of an extra row in the way-back while still providing the nimbleness and parkability of a smallish vehicle.

As unimpressed as we are by the EQB's range, acceleration and peak charge rate, all of which bring up the rear among small electric SUVs, we'll concede that its available and reasonably priced third-row seat sets it apart. There are hardly any compact EVs with three seating rows, and while the EQB's third row is predictably cramped, it could be a panacea for parents who don't want to buy a behemoth in order to have a couple of extra seats for small children. Provided you'll be doing most of your driving around town and can charge up easily at home, a three-row EQB could actually be a nice lifestyle solution. The R1S shines continuously across acceleration, range, towing capacity, cargo space and off-road capability, while the incredible variety of configurations pumps up its overall score. Our favorite is the Dual Max Performance, which hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and somehow manages to tie for the best range in the lineup at 410 miles. Those are jaw-dropping numbers at any price, making Rivian's $94,900 ask seem like something of a bargain. The R1S isn't overtly luxurious inside, but plenty of people seem to prefer that kind of minimalism (see Tesla, e.g.), and the touchscreen tech interface is so snappy and modern that you won't miss Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. We can't recommend the rear-wheel-drive version of the Ioniq 9 despite its lineup-leading range estimate. Why? Because it's dreadfully slow by EV standards (try zero to 60 in 8.4 seconds) and only offered in the sparsely equipped S trim level. For just a few grand more, however, you can step up to dual-motor AWD and enjoy strong acceleration while maintaining more than 300 miles of range. Right out of the gate, the dual-motor Ioniq 9 is one of the most competitive three-row electric SUVs on the market, and it's one of the best values, too. Just remember to give the RWD variant a miss. The EV9 has taken this segment by storm, and understandably so — just look at it, and then look at how little it costs compared to other three-row EVs. Much like the gas-powered Telluride (though obviously more avant-garde), the EV9 manages to make a three-row family hauler look downright cool, which is not an easy feat. Drawbacks? Not many, but note that the Long Range RWD variant sacrifices a lot of power to get its range rating over 300 miles. We're talking 0-60 in close to 9 seconds if you go that route, which indicates that it's more of a marketing play — "more than 300 miles of range!" — than the EV9's best foot forward. The dual-motor EV9 AWD is easily the pick of this litter, as it only costs $6k more and gives you up to 283 miles of range while massively improving the 0-60 time to 5.0 seconds. It even gives the base Rivian R1S Dual Standard a run for its money on both fronts while costing far less. The Vistiq's obvious limitation in this esteemed company is range, especially for the price. GM certainly knows about mega-range EVs, as evidenced by the stupendous Escalade IQ, but the Vistiq ain't one of them, topping out at 305 miles with the standard 11.5-kW onboard charger and dropping to an even 300 miles with the optional 19.2-kW charger specified. Since range is a top priority for most EV shoppers — and Lucid and Rivian will happily provide far more of it in this lofty price range — we've graded the Vistiq accordingly. But if you're just fine with 300-ish miles at best, this Caddy is otherwise a highly compelling three-row EV, from its suave styling to its excellent 33-inch curved infotainment display and spacious seating. It does hit an EPA-estimated 310 miles of range whether you get the standard (0-60 in 5.7 seconds) or Performance variant (4.7 seconds), and its 250-kW max charge rate is strong, but there's no single metric here that really stands out when the bar set by Rivian and others is so high. The third row in the EQS faces forward, of course, but it's more of a handy feature in a pinch than a true three-row solution. Still, if you like the EQS otherwise — and putting styling and pricing aside, we can understand why you would — then the optional third row could add major value for those occasions when, say, the grandkids need to hitch a ride. Buzz excels, providing adult-sized, ride-all-day comfort in all three seating rows. It also gives you the most cargo space in this segment, although you'll have to wrestle with the third-row seats and remove them if you want to achieve that max figure — the battery pack prevents the rearmost seats from folding into the floor. Ultimately, the Buzz's viability for your lifestyle may come down to whether you're OK with its sub-240-mile range and $60k-plus price tag.
