Is the 2025 Tesla Model X a Good SUV?
"The Model X is a pioneer in this segment, having brought adult-friendly three-row seating to the EV space many years before the rest. In typical Tesla fashion, it's still the same basic vehicle it was when it debuted about a decade ago, but consistent updates have kept it feeling fresh, while its range (300-plus miles) and acceleration (sub-4-seconds to 60 mph) remain highly impressive. It's also the only SUV here with gullwing-style 'falcon wing' rear doors, for better or worse. We just wish Tesla would update the styling, as the X has looked like a rolling egg since it debuted and the competition — Rivian, Cadillac, even Kia — is only getting handsomer."—Ranked #8 out of 11 Large 3-Row Electric SUVs
"Did you know there's a two-row Model X? We remember being surprised to hear that, because the impressively adult-friendly third-row seat seems to be the whole point of the X's substantial size and carnivalesque 'falcon wing' rear doors. Anyway, the X actually starts out as a two-row SUV at the base price point, so you can have it that way if you want it. Regardless of how many seating rows it has, this Tesla continues to astonish us into its golden years with impressive-for-a-big-SUV range and impressive-period acceleration."—Ranked #5 out of 7 Premium Luxury Electric SUVs
Which 2025 Tesla Model X Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2025 Tesla Model X that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.
1. 2025 Tesla Model X AWD 2-Row
- Base Price: $89,990
- Range: 352 mi
- Battery Capacity: 100.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 250 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive

- Torque: N/A
- 0-60: 3.8 sec

- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
We struggle to see the point of the two-row Model X. Why would you buy the Tesla of minivans without the third seating row? For us, this configuration is a non-starter.
2. 2025 Tesla Model X AWD 3-Row
- Base Price: $93,490
- Range: 352 mi
- Battery Capacity: 100.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 250 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 670
- Torque: N/A
- 0-60: 3.8 sec
- Weight: 5,148 lbs
- Length: 199.1 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Making the Model X a three-row vehicle costs a minimum of $3,500, which gets you the seven-seat layout that includes a second-row bench seat. That's the one we've captured here in the data. If you want a six-seat layout with captain's chairs in the second row — which incidentally is the only way the Model X Plaid is sold — that'll be a $6,500 upcharge. Whichever one you choose, it'll make a lot more sense than the base two-row Model X. The whole point of the second-row "falcon wing doors" is to ease third-row ingress and egress; this is a three-row vehicle at heart. And when you look around for other three-row vehicles that get to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds, you'll find it's a very short list.
3. 2025 Tesla Model X Plaid
- Base Price: $104,990
- Range: 335 mi
- Battery Capacity: 100.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 250 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 3 electric motors
- Horsepower: 1,020
- Torque: 1,151 lb-ft
- 0-60: 2.5 sec
- Weight: 5,248 lbs
- Length: 199.1 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Offered only in the six-seater configuration, the three-row Model X Plaid is the closest thing we have today to the Mercedes-Benz R63 AMG, which was a shockingly fast minivan-adjacent utility vehicle with similar seating. That's a compliment, by the way. Just like that Benz, the rather ungainly Model X Plaid doesn't look the part of a high-performance car at all, yet its 2.5-second blast to 60 mph will certainly get the attention of all passengers. It's also remarkable that the Plaid gives up less than 20 miles of range to the standard Model X despite pumping out dramatically more power from its tri-motor setup.
