EVs continue to blur the line between mainstream and luxury, and the Model Y is perhaps the biggest offender. Image-conscious drivers in cities like Los Angeles (ask us how we know) have fully embraced this SUV, routinely buying Ys to replace their BMWs and Benzes and what have you. But if you look at the pricing, the Model Y actually undercuts most mainstream rivals, let alone luxury EVs. Anyway, it's no great secret why the Model Y is a bestseller around the globe: it gives you great range and acceleration at a great price, and its minimalist interior vibe hits the right notes for today's tech-forward culture. We prefer the Model 3 ourselves for its superior handling, range and performance, but if you're looking for that high-riding SUV experience with the extra cargo space that comes with it, it's hard to come up with an argument against the Model Y, unless you want to bring the CEO into the conversation. The Q6 e-tron shares its platform and much of its innards with the Porsche Macan Electric, so it's natural to compare the two. We're not blown away by either model's styling, but they do check the box for subtlety. In particular, the Q6 e-tron looks like a normal Audi SUV, for the most part, although its tall, blunt nose falls short of suaveness. Moving to the numbers, we're impressed by how accurately the Q6 e-tron hits the marks established by the top-selling Model Y. If you want 300-plus miles of range, quick acceleration and rapid DC charging in a more luxurious package than Tesla can provide, the Q6 e-tron is well-positioned to be your next EV SUV. The GV60 is one of many genre-benders among luxury electric SUVs, as it looks more like a sporty hatchback than a sport 'ute. In any case, it's also got a great set of attributes, whether you want range (nearly 300 miles from the rear-drive model) or all-season power and traction (314-429 hp from the dual-motor AWD versions). You do give up a lot of range if you want that second motor, but that’s a common affliction among EVs. A lofty DC charge rate makes the GV60 ready for road trips, too, as does the nicely trimmed interior with cutting-edge infotainment. The Q4 e-tron is a competitive entrant in this class, but there's nothing that makes it stand out. Everything from the range to the acceleration and even the styling is respectable but also forgettable. Compared to its newer Q6 e-tron stablemate, which is about seven inches longer, the Q4 has a much lower peak charge rate as well as less range. Of course, it also costs nearly $15k less than its big brother, but it's still significantly more expensive than the Tesla. The Q4 e-tron's nifty high-tech interior, which features a crisp touchscreen interface that's angled toward the driver for a cockpit-like feel, is the only reason why we favor it slightly over the Volvo twins, which roll with relatively old cabin tech. That Equinox is one of the least exciting dual-motor EVs on the market with its sub-300-horsepower output, and the Optiq only makes slightly more power while weighing in at more than 2.5 tons. We'd feel a lot more bullish on this Caddy if it had at least as much oomph as the similarly priced, 365-hp Chevy Blazer EV RWD, which incidentally gives you 330-plus miles of range. Shoot, the Cadillac Lyriq costs less than $6k more to start — why not just get one of those? Both the Blazer EV and the Lyriq are technically midsize, but they're close enough to consider. Unfortunately, there isn't a version of this Volvo that offers both of those strengths; you have to choose one or the other. The key difference is that the Sportback is only available in the "55" dual-motor all-wheel-drive specification, which is why its range is lower (and its price higher). The Electrified GV70 is inherently compromised due to sharing its platform with the gas-powered GV70, whereas the GV60 is purpose-built to be the best EV possible. That said, the Electrified GV70 would be a viable alternative to the GV60 Performance at the right price, as it shares that model's 429-hp powertrain and broadly matches its range and performance. The RZ is Exhibit A of how electric vehicles are shaking up traditional luxury categories. Consider that Lexus has now cut the price of the RZ to compete with the base Hyundai Ioniq 5, which isn't even in this segment because Hyundai isn't a luxury brand. It underscores the fact that EV shoppers care about range more than just about anything, and when a luxury electric SUV fails to deliver more than 266 miles of it — as in the RZ's case — it simply doesn't matter what badge is on the grille. Even its maximum range figure of 251 miles is subpar, and if you get that version, you have to live with poor acceleration (0-60 in 8.5 seconds). Would you rather fix the acceleration problem? It's possible, but then you're looking at a max range of barely more than 200 miles. These just aren't competitive numbers, and it's not like Benz is selling EQBs for cheap. If there's a saving grace here, it's the EQB's optional and very reasonably priced third-row seat, which is tiny but potentially useful for families who need extra seats for small children. Step up to a dual-motor 3 and you'll have a more competitive balance of acceleration and range, but that puts the price into the $70s. More than five inches longer than the closely related Honda Prologue, the biggest knock against the ZDX is that it feels every bit as large as it is, even in the sporty Type S trim, which incidentally weighs more than 6,000 pounds. A driver's SUV this one is not. We like how the midgrade A-Spec RWD model delivers nearly 500 horsepower and more than 300 miles of range, but the ZDX is frankly outdone across the board by its more fashionable Cadillac Lyriq platform-mate, which incidentally costs less. Well, is it the S-Class of electric SUVs? Judging by the anonymous soap-bar styling, we'd have to say it's not. But if you're wondering what sets the EQS SUV apart from its EQE SUV stablemate, which is about 10 inches shorter, it's more than just the stretched dimensions and the optional third-row seat that can be stuffed in the back. What's particularly notable about the EQS is that every version gives you about 300-320 miles of maximum range, which leaves you free to choose your preferred amount of horsepower, whereas the EQE sticks to the familiar inverse correlation between power and range. There's a Maybach variant, too, in case the regular EQS strikes you as too plebeian. But until Mercedes gives it true flagship styling, it'll be hard for this machine to generate real enthusiasm. But this boxy behemoth is hamstrung by its meager 239-mile range rating and relatively humble 579-horsepower output, both of which are put to shame by the far cheaper Hummer EV SUV.
