- Non-hybrid models' acceleration and fuel economy can't compete with newer rivals
What's New for 2025?
Although last year's XC90 will continue to be sold as a 2025 model at the beginning of the year, the real 2025 XC90 is the refreshed model seen here. The vibe is definitely more modern now, but if you look past the tasteful styling tweaks and embiggened touchscreen, it's the same decade-old vehicle underneath.

Is the 2025 Volvo XC90 a Good SUV?
"The XC90 is one of the more attractively styled SUVs on the road, especially with the tasteful updates it received for 2025. But the underlying platform is positively ancient by today's standards, having debuted for the 2017 model year. As such, it's no great surprise that the standard B5 and B6 four-cylinder powertrains simply can't compete with newer rivals. You could always spring for the plug-in-hybrid T8 variant and solve the acceleration problem — 455 horsepower will tend to do that for you. We're fans of the refreshed XC90 PHEV, but the regular model's lackluster engines make it hard to recommend despite the updates."—Ranked #6 out of 10 Midsize 3-Row Luxury SUVs
Which 2025 Volvo XC90 Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2025 Volvo XC90 that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.
Scroll to:
1. 2025 Volvo XC90 B5 (2.0T AWD)
- Base Price: $59,745
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 247
- Torque: 266 lb-ft
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 4,000 lbs
The XC90 B5 doesn't have enough power to compete with the big guns in this segment, and its fuel economy is disappointing, especially given that power deficit.
2. 2025 Volvo XC90 B6 (2.0T AWD)
- Base Price: $64,645
- MPG Combined: 23
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged and supercharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 295
- Torque: 310 lb-ft
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Although the XC90 B6 cranks up the power and torque compared to the base B5, it's essentially the same engine with a supercharger thrown in, and the struggle to accelerate is real compared to rival three-row luxury crossovers. Volvo's been skating by with just a single four-cylinder engine for many years now, and a hefty vehicle like the XC90 reveals the limits of this strategy. Check out the fuel economy, too — not good.
3. 2025 Volvo XC90 T8 (Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $73,000
- MPG Combined: 27
- EV Range: 32 mi
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 455
- Torque: 523 lb-ft
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
The XC90 PHEV is frankly the only truly competitive variant in the lineup. Whereas the non-hybrid B5 and B6 struggle to keep up with swifter and more fuel-efficient rivals, the T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain solves all of that with its prodigious 455-horsepower output and useful 32 miles of all-electric range, which gives way to a respectable rating of 27 mpg in mixed driving in gas-electric hybrid mode. You'll obviously pay a lot more to get into an XC90 T8, but it's the only XC90 we can unreservedly recommend.
