FAST FACTS
2024 Volvo XC90
Pros
- Handsome design will never go out of style
- Plug-in hybrid provides swift acceleration and useful (if far from class-leading) electric range
Cons
- Cramped third-row seat
- Smallish touchscreen looks and feels outdated
- Non-hybrid models' acceleration and fuel economy can't compete with newer rivals
What's New for 2024?
The current XC90 once again carries over unchanged as it enters its jaw-dropping 9th year of production for 2025. There's no denying its understated good looks, but little else is truly competitive anymore about Volvo's venerable midsize SUV. Note that a significant refresh — but not a full redesign — is in store for 2025.

Which 2024 Volvo XC90 Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2024 Volvo XC90 that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.
Scroll to:
1. 2024 Volvo XC90 B5 (2.0T AWD)
- Base Price: $56,600
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 247
- Torque: 258 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.3 sec
- Weight: 4,497 lbs
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 4,000 lbs
The XC90 B5 doesn't have enough power to compete with the big guns in this segment, and its fuel economy is disappointing, especially given that power deficit.
2. 2024 Volvo XC90 B6 (2.0T AWD)
- Base Price: $61,500
- MPG Combined: 23
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged and supercharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 295
- Torque: 310 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.4 sec
- Weight: 4,522 lbs
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Although the XC90 B6 cranks up the power and torque compared to the base B5, it's essentially the same engine, and the struggle to accelerate is real compared to rival three-row luxury crossovers. Volvo's been skating by with just a single four-cylinder engine for many years now, and a hefty vehicle like the XC90 reveals the limits of this strategy. Check out the fuel economy, too — not good.
3. 2024 Volvo XC90 Recharge T8 (Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $71,900
- MPG Combined: 27
- EV Range: 32 mi
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 455
- Torque: 523 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.0 sec
- Weight: 5,075 lbs
- Length: 195.0 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
The XC90 PHEV is frankly the only truly competitive variant in the lineup. Whereas the non-hybrid B5 and B6 struggle to keep up with swifter and more fuel-efficient rivals, the Recharge T8 plug-in-hybrid powertrain solves all of that with its prodigious 455-horsepower output and useful 32 miles of all-electric range, which gives way to a respectable rating of 27 mpg in mixed driving in gas-electric hybrid mode. You'll obviously pay a lot more to get into an XC90 Recharge T8, but it's the only XC90 we can recommend.
