Is the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport a Good SUV?
"Oh boy. They're still making this thing?! Perhaps best known among car connoisseurs as a close relative of the depressing Dodge Caliber, the Outlander Sport continues to party like it's roughly 2009, putting up a woeful 0-60 time of 9.5 seconds in base form while only managing 26 mpg. You can upgrade to a bigger engine that knocks that time down to 8 seconds flat, but now the price is up near $30k. There aren't many hard nos on the market today, but this Mitsu is one of them."—Ranked #18 out of 18 Subcompact SUVs

1. 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.0 All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $23,695
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 148
- Torque: 145 lb-ft
- 0-60: 9.5 sec
- Weight: 3,263 lbs
- Length: 171.9 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
Besides being the answer to a sad trivia question — "What's the closest 2024 relative to the long dead and exceptionally terrible Dodge Caliber?" — the Outlander Sport 2.0 is a pokey little SUV that gets poor fuel economy given how slow it is. Seriously, 0-60 in 9.5 seconds and 29 mpg highway? That's straight out of the 1980s.
2. 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport 2.4 SEL All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $28,495
- MPG Combined: 25
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.4-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: CVT
- Horsepower: 168
- Torque: 167 lb-ft
- 0-60: 8.0 sec
- Weight: 3,296 lbs
- Length: 171.9 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
The good news is that the 2.4 SEL (the only Outlander Sport trim with the upgraded 2.4-liter engine) accelerates about as quickly as its Outlander big brother, unlike the truly anemic Outlander Sport 2.0. The bad news — well, there's a lot of it, but we'll start here — is that the Outlander Sport 2.4 SEL costs $100 more than the base Outlander, which is a vastly superior vehicle. Unless you really need the Sport's smaller dimensions to squeeze into a tiny parking space, there's no reason to buy this model.
