Is the 2025 BMW X1 a Good SUV?
"The X1 has evolved into a well-rounded subcompact luxury SUV that's hard to find fault with. It's even a viable downsized substitute for its big brother, the X3, unless you're jonesing for six-cylinder power, which the X1 doesn't offer."—Ranked #2 out of 12 Subcompact Luxury SUVs

1. 2025 BMW X1 xDrive28i (2.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $40,500
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 241
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.2 sec
- Weight: 3,750 lbs
- Length: 177.2 in
- Towing Capacity: 3,500 lbs
Sharp styling and quick reflexes make even the entry-level X1 seem desirable. We prefer the M35i variant's stronger engine, of course, but it's not a must-have given how good the xDrive28i already is.
2. 2025 BMW X1 M35i xDrive (2.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $50,350
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 312
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.2 sec
- Weight: 3,790 lbs
- Length: 177.4 in
- Towing Capacity: 3,500 lbs
The M35i's extra power is tempting, for sure, but keep in mind that it's still coming from a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine, just like the base xDrive28i. So the fundamental character of the vehicle doesn't change here; there's just more urgency when you put your foot down, which is certainly worth something.
