The next big thing? Well, they certainly tend to weigh a lot, if that's what you mean. In seriousness, it's obvious that electric SUVs represent the future of the automobile to a significant extent, and there are already a lot of compelling models to choose from. Most of today's options are compact SUVs, but you can find larger ones (and a few smaller ones) if you poke around. We've rated and ranked all of them in hopes of making your shopping process a little easier. Learn about how we rate vehicles.

Best Subcompact Electric SUVs

These high-riding runabouts bring a touch of SUV attitude to the daily grind while being as easy as a subcompact hatchback to park. Oh yeah, and they run on electrons, so hopefully you've got a charger wherever you plan to park yours. If so, a subcompact electric SUV could be a great solution for local driving, and possibly even the occasional road trip.

The EX30's score is technically an "Incomplete" at this point, since the base model with rear-wheel drive has been delayed due to production issues. Specifically, the China-built EX30 was going to be DOA due to our tariffs, so Volvo had to shift production to Belgium for the US market. Once the EX30 RWD is available, it'll be a value-packed delight, from its subcompact size and nimble handling to its satisfyingly quick acceleration (0-60 in 5.1 seconds). Admittedly, topping out at 261 miles of range and a 153-kW charge rate is a bit disappointing for an all-new 2025 EV, but if most of your driving is local, that's mostly a non-issue. As for the dual-motor EX30 AWD, which is the only one you can get right now, it delivers insane speed (3.4 seconds to 60) for an extra $10k or so, and you only lose a few miles of range in the deal. Hyundai Kona Electric

We'd skip the standard battery, but the Kona Electric's upgraded battery unlocks a respectable top range of 261 miles. It also gives you a lot more power, enabling an adequate 7.0-second dash to 60 mph. This is a solid package if a pint-sized EV is the right fit for your life, but the Volvo EX30's arrival complicates matters greatly. If you can get your hands on a rear-wheel-drive EX30, you might not want to come back to the Kona. Notably, the long-range powertrain takes a big bite out of the Kona Electric's value proposition, as it'll run you at least $37k or so. Another drawback is the humble peak charge rate. As is often the case with Hyundai-Kia products, you can take your pick between two distinctly styled versions of the same basic vehicle — in this case, the Kia Niro EV or the Hyundai Kona Electric. The main difference under the hood, as it were, is that the Niro EV comes standard with the longer-range, 250-mile-plus EV powertrain that delivers better acceleration, while the Hyundai offers a shorter-range version that's cheaper to start. Since we don't recommend the base Kona Electric, we appreciate that the Niro EV takes that configuration out of play, but with a price pushing $40k to start, it's not the value play you might expect. We made the mistake of getting our hopes up about the Countryman SE, thinking that it's a new model for 2025 and surely Mini would come out swinging. Whoops. Maxing out at 212 miles of range is a good way to send most EV shoppers skedaddling to rival dealerships, especially when most models in the next-level Compact Electric SUV segment have lower base prices. We wouldn't kick a Countryman SE out of the garage as a zippy grocery-getter — you can count on any Mini to be relatively fun to drive — but if you want to be able to take your EV on longer trips, this Mini simply won't cut it. Virtually every EV manufacturer is working overtime to score a win here. One notable member of both classes (because is it luxury, or is it not?), the Tesla Model Y, has lately been the best-selling car on the planet, electric or otherwise.

Is Tesla a luxury brand? We'll let others debate that one, but there's no doubt that the Model Y's aggressive pricing qualifies it for this mainstream segment. Looks aside — we've been cringing at the Y's awkwardly tall jellybean profile since it debuted, and the 2025 "Juniper" refresh merely affixes some new lightbars to the same shape — we have to salute this machine for its all-around excellence. The market doesn't always pick winners, but in this case, the Model Y is both a worldwide best-seller and arguably the best compact electric SUV on the merits. For less than $50k, the Model Y Long Range AWD gives you 327 miles of range while hitting 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, while the Long Range RWD isn't much slower and tacks on 30 miles of range for less coin. There's even an unusually spacious cargo bay when you fold the rear seats down. Stylish, capable, versatile and efficient, the Ioniq 5 — significantly updated for 2025 — has just about everything a compact electric SUV shopper could ask for. You'll want to skip the base rear-drive model with the standard-range battery, however, as it gives you less than 250 miles of range and lacks power, too. Step up to the long-range battery and you've got a couple of excellent options, starting with the long-range rear-drive Ioniq 5, which offers nearly 320 miles of range and gets to 60 mph in a little more than 7 seconds. The all-wheel-drive Ioniq 5, meanwhile, adds a second motor and cuts the sprint to 60 mph way down to the mid-4-second region, while the range drops to a maximum of 290 miles. That's well shy of the Model Y Long Range AWD's range estimate, but it's close enough to be in the ballgame. Like its Hyundai Ioniq 5 platform-mate, the Kia EV6 is refreshed for 2025 and continues to be a well-rounded compact electric SUV, offering competitive range and performance along with pleasingly up-to-date technology. You can see at a glance that the Kia puts more emphasis on a sporty look and feel, which means less cargo capacity and a more cockpit-like vibe inside. Nonetheless, it broadly shares the Ioniq 5's speedy peak charge rates and bladder-bursting range estimates. We tip our cap to Hyundai/Kia for offering such clearly differentiated products using the same platform (GM, for example, has struggled to do so with the Equinox EV and Blazer EV). Chevrolet Blazer EV

The Blazer EV is only barely longer than the cheaper Equinox EV, although it does have a 5.5-inch-longer wheelbase, and it shares its AWD powertrain with its lesser sibling, too. The main reason to stretch for a 2025 Blazer EV is its optional rear-wheel-drive powertrain, which is shared with the Cadillac Lyriq and increases both power and range considerably. On the other hand, the rear-drive Blazer EV costs nearly as much as the Lyriq, so its value proposition is questionable. We do prefer it to the Cadillac Optiq, however, which, despite the luxury badge, delivers both less power and worse range while utilizing the Equinox EV's shorter wheelbase. Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Mach-E looks sharp, drives nicely and offers plenty of power, tech and interior space. It also serves up competitive 300-mile range estimates if you get the extended-range battery. Compared to the Model Y, which is of course its primary bogey, it feels heavier (because it is) and more SUV-like, which may be appealing to some. But Ford has thus far failed to address the Achilles' heel of this model, namely, its relatively low DC charging speeds compared to the Tesla, the Ioniq 5 and numerous others. Chevrolet Equinox EV

We're stretching the definition of "Compact" to squeeze the Equinox EV into this segment, since it clearly competes with the others here on price and features. But keep in mind that the Chevy is significantly longer than most of its rivals, although it's slightly shorter than the Blazer EV, which notably has a much longer wheelbase (121.8 inches vs. 116.3). Focusing on price and range, though, there's no doubt that the Equinox EV is one of the best values going in electric SUVs. It's not exciting to drive, and it lacks the video-game acceleration that many rivals offer, but it's undeniably a lot of EV for the money. Like the Mach-E, however, its peak charge rate is a humble 150 kW, so it's a compromised road-tripper despite the gaudy maximum range. See Full Details >

The ID.4 is competitive on paper, but do you find yourself wanting it based on how it looks? That's the primary problem with this VW. If it had more of the GTI's angular sportiness, for example, then perhaps some Model Y shoppers would be taking a closer look, because the Y's styling certainly isn't a strength. As things stand, however, the ID.4 is about as exciting to look at as a bar of soap, so Tesla fans have no good reason to reconsider their allegiance. That's a shame, because our ID.4 pick — the rear-wheel-drive Pro model — gives you 291 miles of range and sprints to 60 mph in five and a half seconds for around $45k, which is all good stuff. Honda Prologue

The Prologue is close to being a carbon copy of the Chevrolet Blazer EV, styling aside, although the Blazer EV's horsepower ceiling is much higher. We do like what Honda has done with the Prologue's exterior shape, and that's likely a big part of its sales success. But the related Chevrolet Equinox EV offers the exact same powertrains as the Prologue for a lot less coin, so unless you need Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, which both Chevys lack, you'd be well advised to visit your Chevy dealer. On the road, the Prologue feels wider than it is and provides merely adequate EV transportation. Even the dual-motor version doesn't accelerate with the verve that we've come to expect from all-wheel-drive EVs. The hard interior plastics likewise fail to impress, especially for a model that starts near $50k. Nissan Ariya

It's hard to stand out from the crowd of small electric SUVs, and the Ariya is in danger of getting lost in the shuffle. Forget about the sub-$40k base price; that gets you the smaller battery with range that barely surpasses 200 miles. It'll be at least $45k or so to get the bigger battery, but you do get a decent 289 miles of range at that price, so it's not like the Ariya is uncompetitive. It's also a pleasant thing to drive, thanks to a quiet cabin and a suspension that emphasizes comfort over sport. It would perhaps be going too far to call the bZ4X a total dud. It does have spacious seating in both rows, and it comes standard with a nice 12.3-inch touchscreen. If you're looking for up-to-date EV fundamentals, however, this Toyota doesn't have them. Its range tops out around 250 miles, its acceleration is unimpressive for an EV, and its charging speeds are relatively low. EVs continue to blur the line between mainstream and luxury, and the Model Y is perhaps the biggest offender. Image-conscious drivers in cities like Los Angeles (ask us how we know) have fully embraced this SUV, routinely buying Ys to replace their BMWs and Benzes and what have you. But if you look at the pricing, the Model Y actually undercuts most mainstream rivals, let alone luxury EVs. Anyway, it's no great secret why the Model Y is a bestseller around the globe: it gives you great range and acceleration at a great price, and its minimalist interior vibe hits the right notes for today's tech-forward culture. We prefer the Model 3 ourselves for its superior handling, range and performance, but if you're looking for that high-riding SUV experience with the extra cargo space that comes with it, it's hard to come up with an argument against the Model Y, unless you want to bring the CEO into the conversation. The Q6 e-tron shares its platform and much of its innards with the Porsche Macan Electric, so it's natural to compare the two. We're not blown away by either model's styling, but they do check the box for subtlety. In particular, the Q6 e-tron looks like a normal Audi SUV, for the most part, although its tall, blunt nose falls short of suaveness. Moving to the numbers, we're impressed by how accurately the Q6 e-tron hits the marks established by the top-selling Model Y. If you want 300-plus miles of range, quick acceleration and rapid DC charging in a more luxurious package than Tesla can provide, the Q6 e-tron is well-positioned to be your next EV SUV. Plus, every Macan Electric delivers an impressive 270-kW max charge rate, making this a great choice for road-trip recharging, as EVs go. Best Compact Electric 3-Row SUVs

The electric SUVs gathered here offer the versatility of an extra row in the way-back while still providing the nimbleness and parkability of a smallish vehicle.

There are hardly any compact EVs with three seating rows, and while the EQB's third row is predictably cramped, it could be a panacea for parents who don't want to buy a behemoth in order to have a couple of extra seats for small children. Provided you'll be doing most of your driving around town and can charge up easily at home, a three-row EQB could actually be a nice lifestyle solution. The R1S shines continuously across acceleration, range, towing capacity, cargo space and off-road capability, while the incredible variety of configurations pumps up its overall score. Our favorite is the Dual Max Performance, which hits 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and somehow manages to tie for the best range in the lineup at 410 miles. Those are jaw-dropping numbers at any price, making Rivian's $94,900 ask seem like something of a bargain. The R1S isn't overtly luxurious inside, but plenty of people seem to prefer that kind of minimalism (see Tesla, e.g.), and the touchscreen tech interface is so snappy and modern that you won't miss Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.
