They also tend to cost more than the compacts, not surprisingly, but the extra coin gives you access to more power under the hood and more features inside, especially in the luxury segments. The Outback has matured into an impressive all-around performer among midsize wagons — er, SUVs. They're calling this an SUV now, right? Anyway, a versatile wagon body with a suspension lift is just fine by us, especially with the zesty turbocharged 2.4-liter engine aboard. The base 2.5-liter non-turbo engine struggles to keep up with rival midsize SUVs, but if that bothers you, the turbo's got you covered, albeit at a much higher starting price in the $40k neighborhood. Interestingly, the turbocharged Wilderness trim accelerates even more quickly thanks to shorter gearing that's ostensibly aimed at improving off-road torque. Mazda CX-70

The first thing to know about the CX-70 is that it's exactly the same length as the three-row CX-90 family hauler, which puts it on the verge of full-size dimensions. This is a rather long midsize SUV, in other words. If you're cool with that, you might also like the CX-70's turbocharged inline-6 engine; it's less speedy than the spec sheet would suggest, but it still feels more special than most motors in this class, and it's remarkably fuel-efficient for a six. There's also a four-cylinder plug-in-hybrid variant that offers 26 miles of electric range and slightly quicker acceleration. Either way, the CX-70 is uncommonly engaging to drive, which we find more than compensates for its fiddly knob-controlled infotainment screen that's also a touchscreen if your arm's long enough to reach it. Honda Passport

Redesigned for the 2026 model year, the square-shouldered Passport is arguably more stylish than ever, and the 12.3-inch touchscreen inside addresses the previous Passport's main technological shortcoming. The new model is also slightly larger, adding 2.7 inches in the wheelbase column and 2.4 inches from nose to tail. That opens up appreciably more cargo space, but there's also a weight gain of about 250 pounds to contend with, and the naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 only gets 5 extra horsepower. The Passport's fuel economy, moreover, is essentially unchanged and remains underwhelming despite the substitution of a 10-speed automatic transmission for the previous 9-speed unit. Sporting one of the highest base prices of any non-luxury midsize SUV, this Honda has its work cut out to convince you, but we rate it highly because of its appealing looks, broad skill set and excellent resale value. Jeep Grand Cherokee

The JGC has traditionally been a top contender in this segment, but its nondescript V6 engine holds it back, especially now that you can't upgrade to a V8 any longer. Sure, the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid offers much better performance, but it also adds more than $20k to the starting price. To be fair, the JGC V6's acceleration and fuel economy remain competitive with the new four-cylinder 4Runner, but that's faint praise. We'd love to see Jeep squeeze the Hurricane turbo inline-6 into the JGC's engine bay. Having said that, this Jeep is still a luxurious, feature-rich SUV with real off-road capability, as it's always been. We're fans, even if we feel it deserves better under the hood. Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

The Atlas Cross Sport takes the luxury-class concept of the "SUV coupe" mainstream, with mixed results. We'd be far more enthusiastic if there were more oomph, but alas, the Cross Sport only offers the same 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder that comes in the regular Atlas. Although we love this engine in the GTI, the magic is mostly gone when you add 1,300 pounds. Underwhelming acceleration aside, the Cross Sport is a respectably refined machine with a surprisingly generous cargo hold given its fashion-first fastback rear roofline. Midsize SUVs come in different shapes and styles, and the Toyota Crown Signia is a case in point. If your tastes run more toward the efficiency end of the spectrum, Toyota will happily steer you away from the rough-and-ready 4Runner and toward this sleek new high-riding wagon, which pairs Toyota's tried-and-true 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain with undeniably upscale styling and appointments. Unfortunately, that powertrain is the biggest problem with the Crown Signia. Its fuel economy is undeniably excellent, but when you give it the beans to pass or merge, the vibrations you feel are more memorable than the acceleration you get. Redesigned for 2025, the 4Runner finally looks the part of a modern SUV inside and out after the previous model's very long production run. The new turbo four-cylinder engine isn't significantly stronger or more fuel-efficient than the old V6, however, while the optional hybrid version doesn't really move the needle on either front and costs significantly more. Overall, it's a better-looking 4Runner with more impressive technology, and its formidable off-road capabilities (and available third-row seat!) persist. The regular Highlander proved to be too cramped in the third row and cargo area for today's shoppers, but the Grand Highlander corrects those flaws and then some. It looks great, first of all — a rare thing in this segment — with muscular angles and contours that give the runway-ready Telluride a run for its money. Its interior oozes contemporary sophistication, highlighted by a 12.3-inch touchscreen that's standard on every model. Want a hybrid? There are two versions to choose from, one that essentially borrows the Camry's hybrid powertrain to maximize fuel economy (figure mid-30s combined), the other prioritizing performance (but also driving up the price) with 362 turbocharged horsepower. There's a tradeoff, naturally: fuel economy dips from 36 mpg (RX 350h) to 27 mpg. But it's great to have choices, right? Is the Crown Signia a luxury car? Well, it's name sounds more like a four-star hotel than a midsize SUV, so on that basis, absolutely. But in seriousness, the Crown Signia's upscale styling and interior appointments earn it a place here on the merits, as does its superb fuel economy. Under the hood, it gives you essentially the same powertrain as the Lexus RX 350h for thousands less. Now, you'll feel where those extra thousands went if you drive them back to back — the Lexus filters out the vibrations from the four-cylinder gas engine when you're hard on the throttle, whereas the Crown Signia lets too many of them pass through to the cabin. But if you can live with that minor indignity, the Crown Hybrid is otherwise a near-Lexus hybrid SUV on the cheap, which makes it a pretty compelling package for efficiency-minded shoppers. The Grand Highlander Hybrid starts about $5k higher than the regular Grand Highlander, but you get a 50-percent improvement on the fuel economy front, which we'd say is a pretty fair deal. The thing to know about the standard Grand Highlander Hybrid is that it uses largely the same powertrain as the Camry sedan, which is a roundabout way of saying it's not fast — not remotely. It gives up 1,500 pounds of towing capacity to the regular model, too, checking in at 3,500 pounds versus 5,000. Stepping up to the "Hybrid Max" turbo hybrid powertrain fixes both of these problems, restoring the 5,000-pound towing limit and getting you to 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds if you stand on it, but the price shoots up into the mid-$50s. The GLE also boasts a stout 7,700-pound tow rating across all of its many powertrains. If you're considering the base GLE 350 four-cylinder model, we strongly recommend stepping up to at least the GLE 450 with its creamy-smooth and surprisingly fuel-efficient turbo inline-6. But no matter what's under the hood, the GLE rules the road with its supple ride and confident, substantial feel at speed. These upscale family haulers pair minivan-like passenger capacity with all the trappings that luxury SUV shoppers expect. But if you're looking for minivan-like comfort, too, you might be in the wrong place. Many of the SUVs here have small third rows, whereas non-luxury midsize three-row SUVs tend to offer more practical seating. You'll find some exceptions, though, and if you only need that third row occasionally, or only for little ones, any of these haulers will get the job done with refinement and features to spare.
