Is the 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good SUV?
"The JGC has traditionally been a top contender in this segment, but its nondescript V6 engine holds it back, especially now that you can't upgrade to a V8 any longer. Sure, the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid offers much better performance, but it also adds more than $20k to the starting price. To be fair, the JGC V6's acceleration and fuel economy remain competitive with the new four-cylinder 4Runner, but that's faint praise. We'd love to see Jeep squeeze the Hurricane turbo inline-6 into the JGC's engine bay. Having said that, this Jeep is still a luxurious, feature-rich SUV with real off-road capability, as it's always been. We're fans, even if we feel it deserves better under the hood."—Ranked #4 out of 9 Midsize SUVs

1. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 Rear-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $36,495
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.6-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 293
- Torque: 260 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,238 lbs
- Length: 193.5 in
- Towing Capacity: 6,200 lbs
The rear-drive Grand Cherokee will get the job done if you don't plan to venture off the beaten path, but keep in mind that your resale value will take a hit when you're ready to unload your non-4x4 Jeep.
2. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 Four-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $39,035
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.6-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 293
- Torque: 260 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.4 sec
- Weight: 4,365 lbs
- Length: 193.5 in
- Towing Capacity: 6,200 lbs
Oddly, the JGC's fuel economy doesn't change a bit (per the EPA) if you add 4WD. With regard to the acceleration numbers, note that the tested vehicle was a fully loaded Summit trim that tipped the scales at an eye-popping 4,863 pounds, whereas the starting curb weight for the JGC 4x4 is about 500 pounds less. That's a huge weight spread from base to loaded, so if you stick with the entry-level Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4, it stands to reason that you'll enjoy significantly quicker acceleration. Having said that, the familiar 3.6-liter V6 feels outdated for a midsize SUV with premium aspirations. The Grand Cherokee deserves better, and for the prices Jeep's charging, you deserve better, too.
3. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe (2.0T Plug-In Hybrid)
- Base Price: $60,490
- MPG Combined: 23
- EV Range: 26 mi
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 375
- Torque: 470 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.3 sec
- Weight: 5,368 lbs
- Length: 193.5 in
- Towing Capacity: 6,000 lbs
Impressively, the 4xe only gives up 200 pounds of towing capacity to the standard Grand Cherokee. It also solves the regular JGC's acceleration problem, lopping about 2 seconds off the sprint to 60 mph and trouncing its lesser sibling at the quarter mile by 13 — yes, 13 — mph. So you're not just getting a part-time electric vehicle in this deal; you're also getting a high-performance SUV rather than a rather low-performance one.
