The Longest Range Plug-In Hybrids of 2025

Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) have a few vital signs to be aware of, fuel economy among them, but the headline item has to be electric range. That's the whole point of a PHEV, after all — unlike a conventional hybrid vehicle, it can literally plug into an outlet or charger and then give you a number of all-electric miles before the gasoline engine kicks in. If the number's too small, you might as well just get a regular hybrid, but the longest range PHEVs have pushed electric range into truly usable territory. Here are the plug-in hybrids with the longest electric range that you can buy right now.
Next Steps
Until fairly recently, PHEVs struggled to provide even 20 miles of electric range, but times have obviously changed. If you have an outlet close enough to where you park, and you don't forget to plug in when you get home, you could seriously make a single tank of gas last for weeks or more. Just keep in mind that PHEVs don't deliver the authoritative acceleration of full EVs, for a simple reason — their relatively modest battery packs and electric motors just aren't capable enough. If you need to scoot, though, the gas engine is always ready to come alive and fill the void. Overall, PHEVs really do serve as a happy medium between ordinary vehicles and EVs, if used as intended. That's a big "if" — lots of PHEV drivers reportedly neglect to plug their vehicles in, which defeats the purpose of buying one — but if you plan to use that PHEV-ness to the fullest, you could very well be delighted by any of today's longest range plug-in hybrids. Just be sure to test drive a few before you make the final call.
