There aren't many wagons left, but we're here to celebrate the last longroofs standing. Although today's SUVs have been pretty well optimized in terms of fuel economy and handling, they still can't beat the best wagons in either category, all else being equal. The sales charts sadly don't reflect that fact, but we're going to keep rating and ranking all the wagons until they're gone, and may that day never come. Learn about how we rate vehicles.

By the way, this longroof Benz, which is blessed with the same phenomenal turbo inline-6 as the E450 sedan, somehow isn't even a fraction of an inch longer than that sedan despite its SUV-grade versatility. The V90 Cross Country is so handsome that we want to forgive it for everything, including being about a decade old by now and failing to impress with its acceleration, fuel economy or cabin technology. Time can't rob this Volvo of its SUV-grade cargo capacity and tow rating, and again, wow, that styling — it is a wagon lover's dream. By the way, the V90 XC is also the antidote to the S90 sedan's silly stretched wheelbase, which is aimed at Chinese consumers with chauffeurs. We're not particularly impressed by the V60 Cross Country's acceleration or fuel economy, but there aren't many off-roady wagons out there, and the V60 XC does stack up reasonably well against the Audi A4 Allroad. We'd say this is the least desirable of the current Volvo wagon crop, however. It's not as stylish as the V90 XC, and its standard-issue four-cylinder powertrain can't hold a candle to the V60 Polestar Engineered PHEV's acceleration or electrified efficiency. Best Midsize High-Performance Wagons

If there were an endangered segments list, this one would be right at the top, but we'll keep it alive for now. Audi and especially BMW seem intent on building ridiculously fast wagons for the foreseeable future.

A stylistic masterpiece with a twin-turbo V8 under the hood that's masterful in its own right, the RS 6 Avant is a rolling reminder that the Germans are on a different planet when it comes to building luxury performance cars, or gas-powered ones, at least. We've seen German automakers lose a lot of ground in the EV arena because the tradecraft they bring to internal-combustion powertrains just isn't relevant to electric motors. It’s not exactly a crowd in this segment, but at least you have a choice. So, why choose the brutish M5 Touring over the gorgeous RS 6 Avant? Whereas the Audi is a dream car for probably every fast-wagon enthusiast, the M5 Touring is more of a towering technical achievement. It’s the kind of car that gets respect, for sure — 717 horsepower will do that for you — but fails to generate lust or longing.
