What's New for 2025?
Although 2025 technically marks the start of a new Mini Cooper generation, we'd call it more of a hard refresh. Perhaps most notably, the standard Cooper now comes with a detuned version of the turbo four-cylinder engine from the Cooper S, ditching the turbo three-cylinder that has powered base Minis for the past decade.

Is the 2025 Mini Cooper a Good Car?
"This fun-centric segment wouldn’t be complete without the latest Mini Cooper, even if there’s no more manual transmission and the famous “go-kart handling” is trending more toward comfort. With the 2025 redesign, the Cooper looks largely the same aside from new taillights, but the three-cylinder has been removed from the engine lineup, leaving BMW’s 2.0-liter turbo four as the sole engine option. The base model gets a detuned version, of course, while the S cranks up the output. The John Cooper Works, meanwhile, gets its own massaged version of the 2.0T that’s the rowdiest of the bunch. We miss the harder-edged Minis of yore, of course, but we specifically don’t miss their unyieldingly firm suspensions, so maybe this kinder, gentler Cooper with lively turbo power is the right blend for our times."—Ranked #3 out of 7 Sport Compact Cars
"Redesigned so subtly for 2025 that you have to check the newly pinched-in taillights to know for sure, the Cooper continues to put fun first, perhaps uniquely so among all cars on the road. Even the base model now gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine from parent company BMW, while the S and JCW variants add more power to that formula. You pay a premium to get into a Mini, but your reward is a spirited driving companion that's essentially a tiny BMW with cooler styling."—Ranked #3 out of 6 Compact Hatchbacks

1. 2025 Mini Cooper 2 Door
- Base Price: $28,950
- MPG Combined: 32
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 161
- Torque: 184 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.4 sec
- Weight: 3,014 lbs
- Length: 152.6 in
Not redesigned so much as firmly refreshed, the 2025 Cooper 2 Door drops the "Hardtop" from its name but has the exact same wheelbase, headroom and legroom measurements as last year's model. Perhaps the biggest news is under the hood, where the base Cooper's three-cylinder turbo has been replaced by a detuned version of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo found in the Cooper S. If there's a less powerful 2.0T four-cylinder on the market right now, we can't think of it, but the choice between base and "S" just got more complicated.
2. 2025 Mini Cooper 4 Door
- Base Price: $29,950
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 161
- Torque: 184 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.7 sec
- Weight: 3,078 lbs
- Length: 158.9 in
The Cooper 4 Door's dimensions are pretty much the same despite the Cooper's redesign for 2025, so the differences come down to the revamped interior and of course what's under the hood. Gone is the old turbo three-cylinder that powered the base Cooper 4 Door for many years, supplanted here as elsewhere by a detuned version of the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder found in the Cooper S. As such, you can expect stronger acceleration in the base Cooper 4 Door now, as well as a harder decision as to whether to upgrade to the Cooper S 4 Door.
3. 2025 Mini Cooper S 2 Door
- Base Price: $32,200
- MPG Combined: 32
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 201
- Torque: 221 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.3 sec
- Weight: 3,014 lbs
- Length: 152.6 in
There's arguably less reason to upgrade to the Cooper S now that the base Cooper shares the sportier model's 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The S has much higher power and torque ratings, though, so unless you want to get a base Cooper and void the warranty by tuning the turbo, the S still makes sense for speed-demon shoppers.
4. 2025 Mini Cooper S 4 Door
- Base Price: $33,200
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 201
- Torque: 221 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.5 sec
- Weight: 3,089 lbs
- Length: 158.9 in
The Cooper S 4 Door gets you to 60 mph 1.2 seconds sooner, but as we've noted across the new Cooper lineup, the base model shares the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Is the S model's more aggressive tuning worth a few grand extra? If you love Mini's fun-to-drive ethos, then yes, probably, but don't expect a dramatically different personality here.
5. 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible
- Base Price: $33,950
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 161
- Torque: 184 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.9 sec
- Weight: 3,139 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
Although the Cooper Convertible's taillights carry over from the previous generation for packaging reasons, this is otherwise the same car as the new 2025 Cooper Hardtop 2-Door, just without the hardtop. That means the base engine is now a 2.0-liter turbo four, just like the Cooper S Convertible, so you have the same dilemma here in terms of whether to upgrade to the sporty S even though its engine is fundamentally similar.
6. 2025 Mini Cooper S Convertible
- Base Price: $37,200
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 201
- Torque: 221 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.7 sec
- Weight: 3,148 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
The Cooper S brand is rightly admired for signifying real performance upgrades compared to the base Cooper, but that changes significantly with the 2025 redesign. Gone is the old base three-cylinder engine that presented a real choice; now you get the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder either way, right down to the engine code (B48A20M2). The tune is much more aggressive in the Cooper S, but paying thousands more for some lines of code might rub some shoppers the wrong way. Although we'd still hold our nose and get the S, this is supposed to be a joyous upgrade, isn't it?
7. 2025 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works 2 Door
- Base Price: $38,200
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 228
- Torque: 280 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.9 sec
- Weight: 3,047 lbs
- Length: 152.6 in
The Cooper JCW has always been an acquired taste, in that its performance benefits compared to the Cooper S aren't obvious by the numbers. You have to feel the differences on the road, and they're real — the JCW's increased sense of urgency is palpable when you pin the throttle or dive into a corner. For us, that's still not enough to justify spending an extra $6k, but reasonable enthusiasts could disagree.
8. 2025 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible
- Base Price: $43,700
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 228
- Torque: 280 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.2 sec
- Weight: 3,197 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
Like its JCW 2-Door sibling, the JCW Convertible has enough new stuff going on in the engine room that its engine gets a different internal code (B48A20O2), whereas the base Cooper and Cooper S models share the same engine and differ only on the software front. That would make us feel better about paying the JCW premium, but the fact that the JCW Convertible only gets to 60 mph half a second quicker than the Cooper S Convertible gives us pause. We love the frenetic go-kart spirit of the JCW; we just wish its advantages over the Cooper S were more decisive.
