Is the 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible a Good Car?
"This segment certainly has some strong characters, but the Cooper Convertible leads the way if whimsical fun is the top priority. Beyond the adorable styling and the trademark go-kart handling, the drop-top Cooper miraculously provides room for four despite its tiny footprint, while all versions now feature turbocharged four-cylinder power. Excellent fuel economy continues to come standard."—Ranked #3 out of 4 Mainstream Convertibles

1. 2025 Mini Cooper Convertible
- Base Price: $33,950
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 161
- Torque: 184 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.9 sec
- Weight: 3,139 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
Although the Cooper Convertible's taillights carry over from the previous generation for packaging reasons, this is otherwise the same car as the new 2025 Cooper Hardtop 2-Door, just without the hardtop. That means the base engine is now a 2.0-liter turbo four, just like the Cooper S Convertible, so you have the same dilemma here in terms of whether to upgrade to the sporty S even though its engine is fundamentally similar.
2. 2025 Mini Cooper S Convertible
- Base Price: $37,200
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 201
- Torque: 221 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.7 sec
- Weight: 3,148 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
The Cooper S brand is rightly admired for signifying real performance upgrades compared to the base Cooper, but that changes significantly with the 2025 redesign. Gone is the old base three-cylinder engine that presented a real choice; now you get the same turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder either way, right down to the engine code (B48A20M2). The tune is much more aggressive in the Cooper S, but paying thousands more for some lines of code might rub some shoppers the wrong way. Although we'd still hold our nose and get the S, this is supposed to be a joyous upgrade, isn't it?
3. 2025 Mini Cooper John Cooper Works Convertible
- Base Price: $43,700
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 7-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 228
- Torque: 280 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.2 sec
- Weight: 3,197 lbs
- Length: 152.8 in
Like its JCW 2-Door sibling, the JCW Convertible has enough new stuff going on in the engine room that its engine gets a different internal code (B48A20O2), whereas the base Cooper and Cooper S models share the same engine and differ only on the software front. That would make us feel better about paying the JCW premium, but the fact that the JCW Convertible only gets to 60 mph half a second quicker than the Cooper S Convertible gives us pause. We love the frenetic go-kart spirit of the JCW; we just wish its advantages over the Cooper S were more decisive.
