Offered seemingly forever with a naturally aspirated V6 engine, the RX 350 has moved on to the world of turbocharging for this generation, sharing its 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder with the smaller NX 350. It gets the job done, but neither the acceleration nor the fuel economy is particularly good.
Adding all-wheel drive to the RX 350 doesn't boost the weight too much and only costs you a single mpg — and $1,600.
Sharing its hybrid powertrain with the smaller NX 350h, the RX 350h offers most of its lesser sibling's efficiency and acceleration while increasing interior space considerably.
Just in case the hybrid-powered RX 350h doesn't have enough juice for your taste, Lexus also offers the RX 500h, which comes only in "F SPORT" trim to drive home the performance theme. Adding more than 100 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque thanks to a completely different engine (2.4T) and transmission (6-speed auto), the RX 500h is very much its own entity. The fuel economy takes a dive, though, falling short of 30 mpg on the highway, so you'll have to decide how much that matters.
The plug-in-hybrid RX 450h+ is yet another RX model that shares its powertrain with the smaller NX crossover, which in turn borrows this specific PHEV powertrain from the Toyota RAV4 Prime. How's that for a family reunion? Fortunately, this powertrain delivers impressive electric range, fuel economy and acceleration wherever it's found.
