What were you expecting, a coupe or a convertible like the S5 has been for many years? That changes for 2025 — the S5 is now a hatchback sedan, serving as Audi's all-purpose answer to both the BMW M340i sedan and the BMW M440i Gran Coupe. It effectively replaces both the S4 sedan and the S5 Sportback.

"The S5's silky smooth turbocharged V6 makes it a formidable competitor, even if this engine pales in comparison to the BMW M340i's turbo inline-6, which delivers more power and far better fuel economy. On the road, the S5's refinement is laudable, but there's relatively little in the way of driving excitement beyond the seemingly bottomless thrust of that turbo six. Compared to the S5 Sportback that it replaces, the S5 matches the Sportback's handy hatchback trunk while swapping out the old eight-speed automatic transmission for Audi's seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual.
