What's New for 2025?
The GR86 is largely unchanged, but Toyota says its engineers have been fiddling here and there, retuning the shocks and steering with the aim of achieving an even more responsive and planted feel. Throttle response is also said to be sharper, though it was already excellent. Additionally, a GR86 Hakone special edition debuts with special green paint, bronze wheels, Brembo brakes, Sachs dampers and tan leather interior accents, among other unique touches.

Is the 2025 Toyota GR86 a Good Car?
"When does a sport coupe become a sports car? The GR86 blurs that line, for sure. Its Subaru-sourced flat-four engine needs no turbocharging to achieve its robust 228-horsepower output and whisk you to 60 mph in the mid-5-second range. As for its cornering performance, you could argue it's second to none in this price range in terms of feedback and body control. An added bonus is the GR86's handy hatchback trunk, which morphs into a genuinely useful cargo bay when you fold the rear seatbacks flat."—Ranked #2 out of 5 Sport Coupes
Which 2025 Toyota GR86 Should I Buy?
MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. Ordered by price from low to high, here are the versions of the 2025 Toyota GR86 that you need to be aware of, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.
1. 2025 Toyota GR86 Manual
- Base Price: $30,000
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.4-liter flat-4

As the identical twin of the Subaru BRZ, the Toyota GR86 shares that model's delightfully rev-happy four-cylinder engine and perfectly balanced rear-drive dynamics. We love the manual transmission and wouldn't have our GR86 any other way.
2. 2025 Toyota GR86 Automatic
- Base Price: $31,100
- MPG Combined: 24
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.4-liter flat-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 228
- Torque: 184 lb-ft
- 0-60: 6.1 sec
- Weight: 2,851 lbs

If you want an automatic in your GR86 — and we understand more than half of buyers do — the good news is that it's much cheaper here than in the identical-twin Subaru BRZ, which forces you to step up to a fancier trim level to get the slushbox. The GR86 offers the automatic as an $1,100 option on the base model, making the automatic GR86 about $3k cheaper than the automatic BRZ.
