The entry-level AMG GT 4-Door benefits from Benz's superb turbocharged inline-6 engine, but it's overpriced for what you get. Consider that you can have essentially the same powertrain in the E450 sedan for an eye-popping $30k less to start.

What sets the AMG GT 53 4-Door apart from the AMG 43 variant? Although the 53 uses fundamentally the same 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, Mercedes cranks up the power here and lops nearly a half-second off the sprint to 60 mph. But the two models will have a very similar character from behind the wheel, so it's hard to justify the extra cost of the 53.

AMG's twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 is special wherever it's found, and the AMG GT 63 4-Door is no exception. Sure, you're paying 50% more for the 63 than you would for the entry-level AMG GT 43 4-Door, but the latter has the same 3.0-liter turbo inline-6 that Benz puts in seemingly everything these days. In a car like this, you want the cool engine, and that's what the 63 delivers.

What do we have here? It's not fully clear yet, since neither Mercedes nor the EPA had much data to share as of this writing. But we do know that the AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door (say that five times fast) is a plug-in hybrid with ridiculous power and torque, an equally ridiculous all-electric driving range of less than 10 miles, and a curb weight that's about 600 pounds heavier than the "regular" AMG GT 63 4-Door. Given that the latter uses the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 as the 63 S E Performance, we'd be inclined to skip the complexity (and the $40k+ price premium) and stick with the non-hybrid 63.
