Is the 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT a Good Car?
"Although we miss the previous-generation AMG GT's long-hood/short-deck proportions and edgier personality, it's hard to argue with the current GT's rousing performance and curvaceous styling. Essentially a coupe version of the SL-Class roadster, today's AMG GT starts at a misleadingly low price, because that's how much the four-cylinder GT 43 costs. You don't want that one. But the next rung up — the GT 55 — gets you into V8 territory, which is this car's sweet spot. The 4.0-liter twin-turbo Mercedes V8 is one of the best engines in the world, and it delivers a chest-thumping baritone soundtrack that no 911 can match. If your top priority is nimble handling, look elsewhere, but for a grand-touring coupe that does justice to the term, it's hard to beat this Benz."—Ranked #3 out of 6 Luxury Sports Cars
Which 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Should I Buy?

1. 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 43 (2.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $105,900
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 416
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Weight: 3,968 lbs
- Length: 186.1 in
The entry-level GT 43 weighs nearly 400 pounds less than the GT 55, which is the next rung up the GT ladder. It also costs about $30k less to start. Would we have a four-cylinder in our top-shelf Benz sports car? Not in a million years, but you could make an argument for it on paper. Did we mention that the fuel economy is dramatically better? You need the V8 in this car, obviously, because otherwise, why aren't you buying a 911? That V8 burble out the back is what makes the AMG GT truly special. It still looks nice with the four-cylinder, though, we'll give it that.
2. 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 55 (4.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $137,550
- MPG Combined: 14
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 469
- Torque: 516 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.8 sec
- Weight: 4,343 lbs
- Length: 186.1 in
The current-generation AMG GT is essentially the coupe version of the SL-Class convertible. Unlike the SL, which comes standard with a tiny second row of seats, the AMG GT coupe makes that backseat optional. But otherwise, it's the same idea — a smallish two-door with huge power. In the AMG GT's case, you also get 911-aping styling, though it's not that simple; the GT manages to carve out its own identity despite those familiar curves around the haunches, conveying a subtle sense of aggression that the softer 911 lacks. As with the SL, we love the "55" specification and find the AMG GT 63 to be overkill, using as it does the same basic twin-turbo V8.
3. 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 (4.0T All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $179,050
- MPG Combined: 14
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 577
- Torque: 590 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.1 sec
- Weight: 4,343 lbs
- Length: 186.1 in
First reaction to the AMG GT 63 Coupe has to be, "Wow, they're charging $40k-plus to turn up the boost on the same 4.0-liter V8 engine that's in the AMG GT 55?" Of course, there are other unique aspects of the 63, but you have to ask yourself if the same engine — just more of it — is worth that much of a premium. That's just the base GT 63, by the way; there's also a GT 63 Pro variant that cranks the boost up further to 603 hp/627 lb-ft and adds sportiness to the suspension, brakes and interior. Is the Pro worth spending even more? We'd skip that question altogether and stick with the GT 55.
4. 2025 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 63 S E Performance (4.0T Plug-In Hybrid AWD)
- Base Price: $195,900
- MPG Combined: N/A
- EV Range: 9 mi (est.)
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 9-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 805
- Torque: 1,047 lb-ft
- 0-60: 2.7 sec
- Weight: 4,828 lbs
- Length: 186.1 in
Well, okay. It weighs about 500 pounds more than the perfectly thrilling AMG GT 55 and costs roughly $60k extra, and it's got barely half the cargo capacity thanks to a prominent battery hump above the rear axle. So what's the good news? If you want to get to 60 mph in less than three seconds per Benz's estimate, this 805-horsepower monster is your ticket, and it'll also let you putter around town in EV mode to save gas — for a few miles, at least, if you remembered to plug the car in last night. To us, the GT 55 is still the sweet spot if you want a V8-powered 911 alternative.
