Is the 2025 Mazda 3 Hatchback a Good Car?
"The 3 Hatchback is stylish, fun to drive and fuel-efficient, so what's not to like? Well, if you plan to use the backseat to carry adults with regularity, this isn't the hatch for you — it's pretty tight back there. Cargo space, too, is modest by hatchback standards. But if you're looking for a more driver-centric (or front-seat-centric) experience, the 3 hatch is a winner. It even offers an optional turbo engine with serious power if you don't mind the elevated price."—Ranked #4 out of 6 Compact Hatchbacks

1. 2025 Mazda 3 Hatchback 2.5 Front-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $24,950
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.5-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 191
- Torque: 186 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,146 lbs
- Length: 175.6 in
The base 3 hatchback has the advantage of being about eight inches shorter than the 3 sedan while offering the same passenger space and significantly more cargo space. It costs a bit more, too, but we'd say it's worth it.
2. 2025 Mazda 3 Hatchback 2.5 All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $30,560
- MPG Combined: 29
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.5-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 191
- Torque: 186 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,285 lbs
- Length: 175.6 in
As with the all-wheel-drive 3 sedan, the base Mazda 3 hatchback with AWD is surprisingly expensive due to the fact that it's only offered in upscale Carbon Edition trim. If it were our 3 hatchback, we'd want the turbocharged engine, which also comes with all-wheel drive and isn't a huge stretch pricewise.
3. 2025 Mazda 3 Hatchback 2.5 FWD Manual Transmission
- Base Price: $30,650
- MPG Combined: 30
- Drive Type: Front-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.5-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 191
- Torque: 186 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,146 lbs
- Length: 175.6 in
There can't be many folks anymore who want a manual transmission in a small hatchback, but if you're one of them, you're in luck. Mazda will be happy to sell you a 3 hatchback with a six-speed manual transmission and the base 191-horsepower engine. Alas, there's no manual option for the turbocharged engine, but we'll take what we can get.
4. 2025 Mazda 3 Hatchback 2.5T All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $33,250
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.5-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 250
- Torque: 320 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,397 lbs
- Length: 175.6 in
The turbocharged Mazda 3 hatchback costs a pretty penny by economy-car standards, but it also competes with entry-level luxury cars in terms of acceleration and handling. If you're going to get all-wheel drive in your 3 hatchback, you want the turbo motor if at all possible. It transforms the character of the car. As with the turbo sedan, it's worth noting that output drops a fair bit on 87 octane, slipping to 227 hp and 310 lb-ft.
