The entry-level NX used to have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that set it apart from the Toyota RAV4 on which it's based, but now Lexus has dropped that pretense and installed the very same 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four that powers the NX's corporate cousin. Since the NX is loaded up with luxury features, it's even slower than the RAV4 — that 0-60 time is seriously ponderous for a luxury SUV.
Lexus says that the NX 250 AWD gets to 60 mph nearly half a second sooner than the front-drive version, even though AWD adds weight and the engine is the same. That would make some sense if the NX 250 had enough power to create significant wheelspin off the line...which it doesn't. In any case, just keep in mind that this is one of the slowest small luxury SUVs on the market.
The NX 350 is probably more what luxury SUV shoppers have in mind when they think about premium small SUVs. Why? Because unlike the base NX 250, the NX 350, which comes standard with all-wheel drive, actually has enough power to get out of its own way. Boasting a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with plenty of oomph, the NX 350 achieves respectability, if not supremacy, compared to the best from Germany.
Priced about the same as the turbocharged NX 350, the hybrid-powered NX 350h is an interesting alternative. It's massively better on gas, not surprisingly, but it's also not as slow as you might think. Our hearts are with the turbo, but our minds might pick the fuel-sipper.
The first thing that stands out about the NX 450h+ PHEV is how expensive it is relative to the rest of the NX lineup. If you're willing to pony up the extra cash, the plug-in NX rewards you with a useful 37-mile range on battery power alone, plus the swiftest acceleration of any NX when you floor it to activate the gas engine.
