What's New for 2025?
Challenger and Camaro are officially out of the game, and Ford celebrates the Mustang's muscle-car monopoly with big price hikes for the V8-powered GT and Dark Horse versions. Also of note this year are the GT-only 60th Anniversary package and the exclusive, race-bred Mustang GTD with its supercharged V8 and $300k+ asking price.

Is the 2025 Ford Mustang a Good Car?
"As the last muscle car standing, the Mustang needs a new home, and we think it's a natural fit for this segment. If you're talking about sporty coupes, there aren't many other models that would come to mind before Ford's two-door icon. Watch out for the pricing, though; although the EcoBoost four-cylinder remains somewhat attainable, the GT's price is now firmly in luxury territory."—Ranked #1 out of 5 Sport Coupes
"The Mustang is a muscle car without a home now that its traditional rivals have bit the dust. But the truth is that Ford's iconic coupe has been a legitimate sports car in its own right since at least the 2015 redesign, which smoothed over the rough edges and resulted in a world-class performer. You could even argue that the entry-level EcoBoost four-cylinder model is a real alternative to the other sports cars on this list, as it gets you to 60 mph in the mid-4-second range and handles well besides. But the Mustang really starts vying for sports-car supremacy with the GT's V8 under the hood, and yes, you can still get a manual transmission. With a starting price in the mid-$40s, the GT is a lot dearer than it used to be — but in this company, it looks more like a bargain."—Ranked #2 out of 4 Sports Cars

1. 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Coupe (2.3T Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $31,920
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.3-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 315
- Torque: 350 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.5 sec
- Weight: 3,588 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
The four-cylinder Mustang certainly makes the grade numbers-wise — four and a half seconds to 60 is legit speed. Whether the sound and feel of the EcoBoost engine are up to snuff is a separate question, which incidentally might help explain why you can't get the manual with this motor.
2. 2025 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Convertible (2.3T Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $42,945
- MPG Combined: 26
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.3-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 315
- Torque: 350 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,741 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
The Mustang EcoBoost convertible delivers impressive acceleration for a $40k convertible, but if they were our drop-top dollars, we'd put them on the GT with its vastly more mellifluous V8 engine.
3. 2025 Ford Mustang GT Coupe (5.0 Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $45,460
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 480
- Torque: 415 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,832 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
The automatic gets you incrementally better fuel economy and hardly adds any weight, so there's not much of an argument against it. We came up with one, though — it costs more and it's less fun.
4. 2025 Ford Mustang GT Coupe (5.0 Manual Transmission)
- Base Price: $45,460
- MPG Combined: 18
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 480
- Torque: 415 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.2 sec
- Weight: 3,827 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
The Mustang GT coupe's base price has crept up over $40k, but we suppose that's fair given that its primary competitors, the Challenger (at least as we know it) and the Camaro, are dead. If you want a rear-drive V8 coupe with a manual, this 'Stang is close to being the only game in town anymore.
5. 2025 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (5.0 Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $55,480
- MPG Combined: 19
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 480
- Torque: 415 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,012 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
Although we love that the manual GT convertible exists, the automatic might be more in keeping with the vibe of this particular Mustang variant. Not that the Aston Martin DB12 is a Mustang rival, exactly, but it's a four-seat V8 convertible that's about the same length — and it comes only with an automatic.
6. 2025 Ford Mustang GT Convertible (5.0 Manual Transmission)
- Base Price: $55,480
- MPG Combined: 18
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 480
- Torque: 415 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,991 lbs
- Length: 189.4 in
Just the fact that you can get a manual-transmission Mustang GT convertible at all is pretty cool, but we'd be remiss not to tell you that the Camaro SS convertible, in its final year of production for 2024, is also available with a manual and is a few grand cheaper to start.
7. 2025 Ford Mustang Dark Horse (5.0 Automatic Transmission)
- Base Price: $62,980
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 10-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 500
- Torque: 418 lb-ft
- Weight: 3,993 lbs
- Length: 189.7 in
Taken out of its context in the Mustang lineup, the automatic Dark Horse is a pretty cool car for just over $60k. Suppose you don't like the C8 Corvette's midengine styling, for example; well, here's a classic long-nose automatic V8 coupe that's almost $8k cheaper to start. But the Dark Horse's problem is that it's not meaningfully faster than the regular Mustang GT, which costs a lot less. If the GT didn't exist, in other words, we'd be having a different conversation. But it very much does exist.
8. 2025 Ford Mustang Dark Horse (5.0 Manual Transmission)
- Base Price: $63,280
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.0-liter V8
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 500
- Torque: 418 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.1 sec
- Weight: 3,949 lbs
- Length: 189.7 in
Although the Dark Horse is marketed like a high-performance Mustang variant, the truth is that its acceleration is neck-and-neck with that of the Mustang GT, which is about $17k cheaper to start. And that's not surprising when you consider that the Dark Horse only makes 20 more horsepower than the GT and weighs a bit more, too.
9. 2025 Ford Mustang GTD
- Base Price: $325,000 (est.)
- MPG Combined: N/A
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 5.2-liter V8
- Aspiration: Supercharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automated manual
- Horsepower: 815
- Torque: 664 lb-ft
The limited-production, automatic-only GTD is destined to be a car collector's plaything. It seems cool and all, but we'd rather have a previous-generation Shelby GT 350 with the manual.
