"Closer to the RAV4 PHEV in length than to the Niro PHEV, the subcompact Hornet R/T is a decent fit for this class, and its performance is plenty impressive at a glance. You get nearly 300 horsepower in this pint-sized PHEV, plus a generous 33 miles of electric range and a healthy 29 mpg combined in hybrid mode. So why isn't it ranked higher? Because on the road, the Hornet lacks the refined driving character that could help justify its $40k-plus pricing. It feels tall and narrow from behind the wheel, and its suspension admits too much impact harshness into the cabin. It's also space-deprived in the second row and cargo area.
