We still appreciate the Durango despite its advancing age. Even the base Durango SXT impresses with its rear-drive layout, strong towing capacity and spacious cabin, although note that it's just a two-row layout at this price. If you want the third row, that costs extra.

Adding third-row seating to the base Durango SXT only runs you $450, and there's a decent amount of room back there — it's not just for kids. If you think you'll use it at all, it's a no-brainer upgrade.

Stepping up to the 5.7-liter V8 gets you standard three-row seating, which persists to the top of the lineup unless you want your SRT Hellcat with only two rows. Anyway, the 5.7-liter Hemi is a great place to start your Durango engine-shopping. We're not big fans of the base V6, but even this entry-level Hemi makes great noises and accelerates the Durango effortlessly. By the way, the Citadel trim level offers the same 5.7-liter Hemi as an option, so if the R/T is too overtly sporty for your taste, check that out.

The EPA says that the Durango R/T AWD holds its ground on fuel economy despite gaining 137 pounds via that more complex drivetrain. Somehow we doubt that you can have AWD with no penalty there, but it's a cool rig either way. Note that you can also have the 5.7/AWD tandem in the luxury-oriented Citadel trim, which gets the same EPA ratings as the R/T AWD.

Adding all-wheel drive to the Citadel V8 does nothing to blunt its appeal and only costs $2k, so it's an easy upgrade if you think you'll benefit from the added traction.

Do you really need the 6.4-liter V8 when the R/T's 5.7 is available for nearly $25k less? Of course not. But one drive and you're going to want it. Beyond the intoxicating sound and speed, the SRT 392 tows meaningfully more than the R/T, tapping out at a formidable 8,700 pounds.

We're speculating on the weight of the two-row Durango Hellcat, as Dodge doesn't put a number on the weight savings you get from the Lightweight Performance package — that's the no-cost option that removes the third-row seat and replaces the second-row captain's chairs with a three-across bench. It's informed speculation, as the base Durango V6 2-row is 125 pounds lighter than the base Durango V6 3-row, so we've subtracted 125 pounds from the Hellcat 3-Row to arrive at our estimate. In any case, this beast will never be a lightweight, but if you don't want an extra row of seats in the trunk, this configuration fixes that problem and ensures that you'll only lose one seat overall.

The Durango Hellcat is a lot, starting with those 710 horses under the hood, obviously. But it's also approaching 400 pounds heavier than the non-supercharged SRT 392. That doesn't stop the Hellcat from registering a trap speed that's 9 mph higher, which, if you don't know, is a huge margin. But another thing to consider is that the Hellcat only seats six, whereas the SRT 392 can seat up to seven, so in the Hellcat the third seating row barely gets you more seats than the optional two-row setup (which replaces the middle-row captain's chairs with a three-across bench). "But nothing," you might be muttering. "I want the fastest damn Durango there is!" And you've found it.
