The base CT5 is held back by its relatively inefficient and uninspired four-cylinder powertrain.
The CT5 2.0T is already underpowered, and adding the weight of all-wheel drive doesn't help the cause. A 0-60 sprint of nearly 7 seconds is uncompetitive in this segment.
The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 is exactly what's needed to wake the CT5 up. Remarkably, the CT5 3.0T starts just a couple grand higher than the smaller CT4 2.7T, which makes do with a four-cylinder engine. It's a nice value.
With all-wheel drive, the twin-turbo V6's unimpressive fuel economy starts to draw attention to itself, dipping to just 26 mpg highway — that's pretty low for a midsize luxury sedan these days. Still, this is the engine to have, and AWD might give you the traction you need.
The CT5-V only makes 25 more horsepower than the regular CT5 3.0T, which uses the same engine. What you're getting with the V is essentially a more aggressive handling package with looks to match.
Adding AWD to the CT5-V seems like a good idea to us, especially since it barely affects fuel economy.
Equipped with a ridiculous supercharged V8 and six gears that you must shift for yourself, the CT5-V Blackwing manual will go down in history as one of the greatest sport sedans ever made.
The manual CT5-V Blackwing will be the one to have years down the road, but that's not to say the automatic is a slouch. Pay the fee to skip the clutch pedal and you'll still have one of the best sport sedans ever.
