Is the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid a Good Car?
"Toyota knocked it out of the park with the current Prius, and the PHEV version is a home run in its own right. Surprisingly affordable, the Prius PHEV (formerly known as Prius Prime) boasts a 6.6 kW onboard charger, which doubles the charging speed of both its predecessor and the rival Niro PHEV. It's also significantly quicker to accelerate than the already-quick standard Prius, and it delivers largely the same 50-mpg fuel economy once its generous EV range runs out. Throw in great resale value, proven reliability, hatchback versatility...the list goes on. All things considered, the Prius PHEV is one of the best cars on sale today."—Ranked #1 out of 2 Small Plug-In Hybrids

MotorDonkey's proprietary vehicle data identifies every significant version of each model so that you can compare and decide. There's only one standalone version of the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, and here it is, along with our expert analysis and recommendations.

The Prius Prime is a very appealing PHEV, especially now that it has a 6.6 kW onboard charger, which doubles the charging speed of its predecessor. If you're like most people and happen to do a lot of your driving around town, the Prime could limit your refueling stops to a handful of times a year, if that. Note that the fuel economy figure cited here (52 mpg combined) is for the base SE trim with its 17-inch wheels; step up to the XSE or XSE Premium and you'll get 19-inch wheels and 48 mpg combined, as well as 40 miles of electric range versus 45. We'd rather pay less to get more, but the Prime is a great machine either way.
