The 2025 4Runner Hybrid uses the same 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder engine as the standard 2025 4Runner, but it pairs it with a hybrid propulsion system to achieve significantly more power and torque. Nonetheless, its added weight — at least 540 pounds more than a comparable non-hybrid 4Runner — largely neutralizes the extra oomph, while its only fuel-economy advantage is in the city; it’s actually a tick worse on the highway.
Is the 2025 Toyota 4Runner Hybrid a Good SUV?
"The 4Runner Hybrid starts at about the same price as the Lexus RX, if you can believe it, so it belongs in this group. Whether it's a good hybrid SUV is another question. It's a clear disappointment on the fuel-economy front, it's no quicker than the less powerful but lighter standard 4Runner, and you can't have the standard model's third-row seat due to space-consuming hybrid hardware. Why pay significantly more for all of that? We're scratching our heads."—Ranked #4 out of 5 Midsize Luxury Hybrid SUVs

The Hybrid 4WD (or just Hybrid — there is no Hybrid RWD) will likely be regarded as the ultimate 2025 4Runner spec, but whether it's worth the extra spend over the base 2.4T 4WD is an open question. You can't get the third-row seat in the 4Runner Hybrid, for one thing, and various third-party tests have revealed that the four-cylinder "i-Force Max" powertrain — shared by the Tacoma Hybrid and the Land Cruiser — doesn't measurably boost acceleration. Its fuel economy is no great shakes, either, although it'll certainly be more efficient in city driving. It doesn't help that the lightest 4Runner Hybrid is 540 pounds heavier than the lightest regular 4Runner 4WD. All told, it's a mixed bag for the 4Runner's hybrid powertrain, so the significant extra cost would have us strongly considering the non-hybrid lineup.
