1. 2024 Toyota 4Runner RWD
- Base Price: $40,705
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 5-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 278 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,400 lbs
- Length: 190.2 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Sitting on the smaller side of midsize, the base 4Runner remains an appealing rig even in this long-running generation's final year. The five-speed automatic is an anachronism, clearly, as is fuel economy that doesn't get out of the teens even on the highway. But there's a lot of cargo space, plenty of ground clearance and a sense that this thing will outlive all of us with its simple V6 engine and time-tested construction.
2. 2024 Toyota 4Runner RWD 3-Row
- Base Price: $41,510
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 5-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 278 lb-ft
- Weight: 4,400 lbs
- Length: 190.2 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
It may come as a surprise that the 4Runner offers a third-row seat. To us, it's a pleasant surprise, especially since it only costs an extra $805. Why wouldn't you want to add those seats, just in case you need them? Sure, they're tiny by adult standards, but two extra seatbelts can come in handy sometimes.
3. 2024 Toyota 4Runner 4WD
- Base Price: $42,580
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 5-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 278 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.7 sec
- Weight: 4,675 lbs
- Length: 190.2 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
You gotta get 4WD if you're looking at one of these 4Runners. There is no downside whatsoever — the fuel economy is unchanged, the towing capacity is unchanged, and you get a 0.6-inch boost in ground clearance along with the versatility of four driven wheels.
4. 2024 Toyota 4Runner 4WD 3-Row
- Base Price: $43,385
- MPG Combined: 17
- Drive Type: Four-wheel drive
- Engine: 4.0-liter V6
- Aspiration: Naturally aspirated
- Transmission: 5-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 270
- Torque: 278 lb-ft
- 0-60: 7.7 sec
- Weight: 4,675 lbs
- Length: 190.2 in
- Towing Capacity: 5,000 lbs
Since only positives come from adding 4WD to a 2024 4Runner — same fuel economy as RWD, same towing capacity, more versatility, better resale value — you have to start there. And why wouldn't you add the $805 third-row seat, too? There are similarly no drawbacks, as max cargo capacity is the same with or without the extra seats. This is an easy pick for the top 4Runner configuration.
