Even the entry-level Rivian R1T is an incredibly capable vehicle, boasting all-wheel drive, 533 horsepower and a healthy driving range of 270 miles. This is an enormously heavy truck, remember, that can do 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.
The Standard+ battery is a great deal, adding 45 miles of range for just a few grand.
Upgrading to the Large battery pack strikes us as another great deal. An extra 37 miles of range is nothing to sneeze at, especially when it's cold outside and you know your truck is burning up those electrons. For another few grand compared to the Standard+ pack, it'd be a no-brainer for us, although that price bump could become more relevant if you're trying to keep your Rivian under the $80k cap for federal EV tax credits.
It's an impressive feat for a massive truck to earn an EPA range estimate of more than 400 miles. How did Rivian do it? Well, the Max battery pack is the largest of the four, of course, but it also works more efficiently, burning electricity at a rate of 40 kWh/100 mi while the other packs are up in the mid-40s.
The quad-motor Rivian R1T is fantastic if you want EV bragging rights on your block (as well as extended warranty coverage at no charge), but the other Rivians are already silly fast, and they offer significantly more range. That's partly because the quad-motor version comes only with the Large battery pack, whereas the larger Max pack is available on the dual-motor lineup. Also, since the dual-motor trucks make less power, they use less juice, so the Large pack on a dual-motor R1T gets you more range than it does on the quad-motor R1T. Makes sense, right? For our money, we'd consider adding the Performance Upgrade ($5,000) to a dual-motor truck, as it pumps you up to 665 hp and 829 lb-ft without affecting the EPA's range estimates. That upgrade is available on all dual-motor R1Ts except the one with the base Standard pack.
