It's as if Mini knew that the base three-cylinder Cooper Countryman wasn't competitive, because the Cooper S Countryman only costs $250 more to start. Why go with the S? It delivers far better acceleration without hurting fuel economy. Oddly, the S even weighs a bit less than the base model despite its stronger engine. It's the no-brainer pick of the two.
Adding the weight of all-wheel drive to the already power-starved base Countryman is not the answer. Skip the three-cylinder engine if you're considering this model.
Notably, all-wheel drive brings a different transmission — an eight-speed automatic versus the seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual that comes with front-drive Countrymen.
Give the plug-in Countryman a miss, at least for this generation. It costs too much for its measly 17 miles of electric range.
Feeling a bit unhinged? The JCW Countryman might be the subcompact SUV for you. It costs a pretty penny by Countryman standards, but it also gets you to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and looks like no other SUV on the road.
