The dual-motor EQS 450 4MATIC SUV has us wondering why anyone would get the base single-motor EQS 450+, which starts at only three grand less. For that nominal extra spend, you get all-wheel drive and significantly quicker acceleration while sacrificing just nine miles of range.
Adding the third-row seat to the dual-motor EQS 450 4MATIC SUV seems like a smart move to us. You get two fold-flat seats in the trunk and you only pay an extra $1,250. Just don't expect generous passenger space back there.
The EQS 580 4MATIC SUV is a tough one — for a whopping $20k more than the EQS 450 4MATIC SUV, you get the exact same range and significantly more power. Is the extra acceleration worth the spend? If you're spending six figures anyway, then yes, quite possibly.
As with the lesser EQS SUV models, the 580 offers a third-row seat for just $1,250 extra. Granted, it's not a spacious third-row seat, but it gives you two additional seats in a pinch, and there's still room behind the third row for groceries — or fold that row flat and you'll have lots of space back there.
The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV is the sport-utility version of the Mercedes-AMG EQS Sedan. In case that looks like alphabet soup, allow us to clarify: Both of these top-of-the-line models use the same dual-motor electric powertrain, but whereas the Sedan skews sportier with its AMG treatment, the SUV opts for extra luxury via the Maybach sub-brand. It's hard to make a rational case for spending tens of thousands more for minimal performance gains — the key comp in this case being the EQS 580 4MATIC SUV, which is almost as quick and offers slightly more range for $50k less — but Maybach wouldn't be a thing if its customers were beholden to rationality.
