The Discovery has crazy-high ground clearance for a three-row family hauler, so if you're looking to get off the beaten path with a lot of passengers, you could do much worse. This base four-cylinder engine, however, is not the one you want. At least it's the "P300" version, which means it's boosted to produce more power than the "P250" 2.0T found elsewhere in the Land Rover lineup. But the Discovery is a 2.5-ton vehicle, more or less, and far heavier when loaded up with friends and family. The turbo four won't always be up to the challenge, and its fuel economy is mediocre anyway.
If you ask us, the "P360" turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine should be standard on every Discovery. It's not some kind of high-performance option; rather, it simply makes the Discovery's acceleration competitive with that of other such luxury family haulers, while also giving the towing capacity a big boost. Unfortunately, it adds $10k to the Discovery's price, but we wouldn't want to own a Discovery without it.
