The base Sportage hews closely to the formula of its Hyundai Tucson corporate cousin, sharing its powertrain and mirroring many of its measurements. Like its cousin, the Sportage shines in other configurations, but this base engine struggles to provide adequate motivation and isn't particularly fuel-efficient, either.
While the Sportage Hybrid mostly shadows its Tucson Hybrid cousin, there is one key difference: You can get the Kia with front-wheel drive, as shown here, while the Hyundai is only offered in all-wheel drive. That's why the entry-level Kia Sportage Hybrid is both thousands cheaper and significantly more fuel-efficient than its platform-mate. In fact, this front-drive Sportage Hybrid is only a bit more expensive than the standard Sportage with its lackluster 2.5-liter engine. We don't recommend the 2.5, but we definitely dig the Hybrid.
Adding all-wheel drive has a sobering effect on the 2.5-liter Sportage's efficiency, lopping off an unbelievable 7 miles per gallon on the highway. We had to squint at the EPA's website to make sure we got that right. Slow acceleration also comes with this territory, though to be fair, the tested vehicle was the X-Pro variant, which adds some off-roady items that increase the weight. It's not that much heavier, though. The bottom line here is that the all-wheel-drive Sportage 2.5 is remarkably slow and inefficient for such a forward-looking SUV otherwise.
Adding all-wheel drive only costs $1,800 and still leaves you with a healthy 38-mpg rating and plenty of acceleration. But the base front-drive Sorento Hybrid does have a notable advantage on the fuel-economy front.
The Sportage PHEV is another small-SUV hit for Kia, delivering a useful amount of electric-only driving range along with ample combined gas-hybrid power.
