Is the 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning a Good Truck?
"Although the Lightning can't match the shock and awe of the Silverado EV RST's 750-horsepower output, the Ford is still crazy quick for a truck and capable of towing nearly 16,000 pounds. Range is where it falls down — GM and Rivian have simply run away from the pack with their 400-mile-plus capabilities, leaving the 320-mile Ford in their dust. At least the Lightning delivers on the cargo-bed front, mostly, providing a 67-inch example that's just a few inches shy of the GM twins and the Tesla. It's not lightning-fast at DC charge stations, however, finishing well behind the others here in the peak charge rate column."—Ranked #6 out of 6 Electric Trucks

1. 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Standard Range All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $62,995
- Range: 240 mi
- Battery Capacity: 98.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 120 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 452
- Torque: 775 lb-ft
- Weight: 6,015 lbs
- Length: 232.7 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
- Payload Capacity: 2,235 lbs
The base Lighting is technically available in a cheaper Pro trim, but as a regular consumer, you'll start with the XLT trim as your entry into the Lightning lineup. Every trim above the XLT comes with the extended-range battery, so the XLT is your only chance to get the standard battery — and you shouldn't. Its disappointing max charge rate of 120 kW is barely half that of the Rivian R1T, for example, and its 240-mile range isn't so great either.
2. 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range All-Wheel Drive
- Base Price: $67,995
- Range: 320 mi
- Battery Capacity: 131.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 155 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 580
- Torque: 775 lb-ft
- Weight: 6,361 lbs
- Length: 232.7 in
- Towing Capacity: N/A
- Payload Capacity: 1,952 lbs
You gotta upgrade to the extended battery if you're considering a Lightning — it's just that simple. Range increases by a third, the horsepower goes way up too, and you're only paying an extra five grand to start. You also get a faster max charge rate at DC chargers, though 155 kW still isn't impressive.
3. 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum (Extended Range All-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $84,995
- Range: 300 mi
- Battery Capacity: 131.0 kWh
- Peak Charge Rate: 155 kW
- Drive Type: All-wheel drive
- Engine: 2 electric motors
- Horsepower: 580
- Torque: 775 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.0 sec
- Weight: 6,893 lbs
- Length: 232.7 in
- Towing Capacity: 15,900 lbs
- Payload Capacity: N/A
The Platinum carries a lot of extra weight relative to lesser Lightnings, thanks to its 22-inch wheels and wide array of luxury doodads. That results in 20 fewer miles of range, so unless you need every last doodad, you might consider the cheaper Flash and Lariat trims, both of which come standard with the extended-range battery.
