It's interesting to compare the base Suburban 5.3 to the base Tahoe 5.3. The Suburban only costs an extra $3k, but it gives you a larger fuel tank, more thrid-row legroom, the option of nine-passenger seating, and of course more cargo space, all without sacrificing any fuel economy (per the EPA).
As with the Tahoe, the Suburban really shines when equipped with the optional turbodiesel inline-6, which adds just $995 to the bottom line. The fuel economy is astounding for an elephantine SUV, and the low-end torque is deeply satisfying.
Adding 4WD to the Suburban 5.3 drives up the price by $3k while lowering fuel economy, but if you think you'll use 4WD at some point, it's an easy upgrade to justify.
Eclipsing the three-ton mark by 72 pounds, the 4WD Suburban Diesel still gives you 26 mpg on the highway, which is astonishing for such a brute. If we wanted a Suburban, we'd go diesel all day every day.
If you want the fastest Suburban, this is it, but Chevy makes you spring for at least the sporty RST package to get the big 6.2-liter V8 — that's why the price is so high. From there, you can pay even more to get the 6.2 RWD specification in Premier or High Country trim. But hey, if acceleration matters more than fuel economy, this is your Suburban. If you can do without the max-attack power, take a look at the diesel, which is more than $10k cheaper.
Adding 4WD to your 6.2-liter Suburban can be done most affordably (a relative term) with the sporty RST package, while the Z71 package costs a bit more and is off-road-oriented. Or swing for the fences and get the 6.2 in luxurious Premier or High Country trim.
