The regular-cab Silverado 2.7T is the entry point into the Silverado 1500 lineup, providing good thrust under the hood (don't be dissuaded by the "inline-4" part) and offering a three-across bench seat in the cabin. It also happens to have the highest payload capacity of any Silverado 1500 if you specify the long bed.
If you want the 5.3-liter V8 in your regular cab work truck, you'll need to embrace the longer 8-foot bed, but we're guessing you're OK with that if you're considering this specification. Should you want the shorter 6'6" bed instead, Chevy will only let you have the 2.7T four-cylinder engine.
The double-cab body style adds passenger-carrying versatility for a very reasonable fee. Take your pick from six-passenger seating or a five-passenger setup with front buckets; just know that you can only have the 6'6" bed.
The cost of adding 4WD may surprise you — nearly $5k in the case of the regular-cab 2.7T. Note that the regular bed is what's captured in this entry's length data; if you prefer the long bed, it only costs 200 bucks more, and it's the one that technically gives you the full 9,300 pounds of max towing.
The 5.3-liter V8 and the double-cab body style make for a satisfying pairing. This is a lot of work-and-play functionality for a starting price in the low $40s.
The crew cab only adds 20 pounds of weight and doesn't cost much more than the double cab, either. Given that, it'll be hard to turn down the crew cab's luxurious rear legroom.
The 2.7T 4WD double cab is a very capable vehicle, but with a starting price pushing into the mid $40s, it's also an indication of how expensive pickups are these days.
Adding 4WD to the 5.3-liter regular cab work truck drives up the price by a few grand, but this is a pretty cool build, right? A V8 4x4 with no backseat is a recipe for a good old-fashioned truck. Notably, only the long bed was available with the regular cab 5.3-liter 4x4 as of this writing.
If you're looking for four doors on your Silverado with the 5.3-liter V8, the crew cab makes a strong case for itself. It's only a little more expensive than the double cab, and the rear legroom is downright luxurious.
We're getting closer to the $50k mark (to start, remember) with 4WD added to the 5.3-liter V8 double cab, but you can't argue with the all-around skill set here.
The 4WD crew cab is the cream of the 2.7T crop, and it's priced accordingly. But you could also argue that this is a lot of truck for $45k or so to start.
If you're looking for four doors on your Silverado with the 5.3-liter V8, the crew cab makes a strong case for itself. It's only a little more expensive than the double cab, and the rear legroom is downright luxurious.
If you want the desirable 3.0-liter turbodiesel inline-6, you'll have to step up to at least the double cab LT, which starts at $48k, and the diesel runs another $2,390 on top of that. But you get a whole lot of truck for the money, especially if you throw in the optional max trailering package, which juices up the tow rating to an eye-popping 13,300 pounds — tied for best in the Silverado 1500 lineup.
You may wonder why the diesel crew cab weighs less than the diesel double cab in our specs. We're not sure ourselves, as the crew cab weighs slightly more than the double cab if you get the 2.7T or 5.3-liter V8 engine. Maybe a typo by Chevy? There's a lot to keep track of with these trucks. By the way, the diesel crew cab is tied for the top spot in Silverado 1500 towing capacity.
Adding 4WD to the diesel double cab takes you down from 13,300 pounds of towing capacity to an even 13,000 pounds (if you add the max trailering package, that is; the standard capacities are 9,400 and 9,100, respectively). You can probably live with that, right? Fuel economy drops a tad as well, but considering the added utility of 4WD, this remains a supremely capable rig.
MotorDonkey's data typically highlights the base price of each configuration, but in this case we should note that you can actually get a slightly cheaper diesel-powered crew cab Silverado 1500 4x4 — specifically, the Custom Trail Boss 4x4 with the diesel option. That's an awesome truck in its own right (it comes standard with the Z71 off-road suspension and a two-inch lift), but it's a specialty item. If you want to put the diesel in a mainstream Silverado 1500 crew cab, you're looking at the LT trim, which starts at $56,090. The diesel Trail Boss, for the record, starts at $54,390, which strikes us as an enticing offer.
The big boy 6.2-liter V8 is available in multiple Silverado 1500 variants, the cheapest of which is the sport-oriented RST for a hair under $60k to start. Want it in the Trail Boss or ZR2 off-roader? The LTZ or High Country luxury trim? Bring more money, but you can have it. Just know that the 6.2 comes only in the 4x4 crew cab configuration — and that despite all those horses and torques, the diesel inline-6 nips it by 100 pounds in the max towing race.
