Is the 2025 BMW Z4 a Good Car?
"If you're considering the Z4, we think it's a no-brainer to shell out for the M40i variant. Packing 382 horsepower into such a tiny package is a recipe for big fun, especially with the top down. Plus, you can get a manual for 2025 if you want one. And here's the clincher: even the M40i costs thousands less than the base four-cylinder 718 Boxster. We simply can't ignore the Z4's superior value in the final tally, despite the fact that, yes, the six-cylinder Boxster GTS 4.0 is an all-time great. Listen, it had better be an all-timer if Porsche's charging effectively 50 percent more for it than what BMW wants for a Z4 with the superb B58 inline-6 under the hood. Summing up, then: if you have a chance to acquire a Boxster GTS 4.0, fantastic, because it's the best version of either car. But the six-cylinder Z4 in particular is a far better value than the four-cylinder Boxsters, and that's ultimately what tipped the scales."—Ranked #1 out of 2 Small Luxury Roadsters

1. 2025 BMW Z4 sDrive 30i (2.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $54,050
- MPG Combined: 28
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 2.0-liter inline-4
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 255
- Torque: 295 lb-ft
- 0-60: 5.2 sec
- Weight: 3,314 lbs
- Length: 170.7 in
We'd rather have the M40i version's inline-6 engine, but the base Z4 is a sporty little thing that puts the wind in your hair, so there's a lot of appeal no matter what's under the hood.
2. 2025 BMW Z4 M40i Automatic Transmission (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $66,450
- MPG Combined: 25
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 8-speed automatic
- Horsepower: 382
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 3.9 sec
- Weight: 3,543 lbs
- Length: 170.7 in
If you're already considering the base Z4, we think it's a no-brainer to shell out for the M40i variant. Packing 382 horsepower into such a tiny package is a recipe for big fun, especially with the top down. To us, the Z4 doesn't feel complete without the inline-6. You can even get a manual for 2025 if you want one, though it'll run you an extra $3,500.
3. 2025 BMW Z4 M40i Manual Transmission (3.0T Rear-Wheel Drive)
- Base Price: $69,950
- MPG Combined: 22
- Drive Type: Rear-wheel drive
- Engine: 3.0-liter inline-6
- Aspiration: Turbocharged
- Transmission: 6-speed manual
- Horsepower: 382
- Torque: 369 lb-ft
- 0-60: 4.2 sec
- Weight: 3,514 lbs
- Length: 170.7 in
Any model that pairs a manual transmission with BMW's sublime B58 turbo six is OK by us. You can get that pairing in the Toyota GR Supra, but of course the top doesn't go down — so if you want the wind in your hair, too, the Z4 M40i manual is where it's at.
